To all the Europeans clutching their pearls over this after spending the last several days Eurosplaining the sport to us, let me explain it to you.
Even if Balogun deserved a red (he didn’t), the referee misused VAR under FIFA’s own rules. That resulted in a red card that couldn’t be appealed.
FIFA then correctly used Article 27 to review and suspend the ban because the initial VAR error led to an unappealable decision.

At the start of this tournament Cristiano Ronaldo's red card suspension (for slamming a defender in the back with an elbow) was overturned by FIFA on appeal.
Unimaginable if Balogun's isn't
Balogun was in on goal. He beat the defender and was about to score.
No red card. No penalty. No yellow card. No foul. No review.
The bizarre thing is that Fox Sports showed a replay that began just AFTER the defender let go of the arm. So weird. How could the officials miss this? And how could the TV crew miss it as well? @USMNT
According to the Laws of the Game a red card via VAR can only be handed out for:
* Denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
* Serious foul play/reckless challenge
* Violent conduct, biting or spitting
* Using offensive, insulting or abusive language
No, that wasn't a red.
