The Frailty of Modern Man: Softness of Soul and the Flight from Suffering

In our age of unprecedented comfort, we have grown strangely fragile. We often demand immediate relief for aches and pains, sorrows, inconveniences, and troubles that our ancestors readily bore as the ordinary burdens of life. A twinge of anxiety, a moment of boredom or emotional discomfort sends us spiraling and reaching for distractions, excuses, or validation. Although psychiatry and counseling have developed techniques that may help many people experiencing a clinical mental disorder, it has also become a blanket excuse for many, especially among younger generations. Young people are experiencing a deepening weakness of will, an enfeeblement of the moral faculty (reasoned ethical judgment) that threatens the very sinew of human character.

He called it “the final logic of the dehumanization of man” and warned that in denying both God and private property, communism produces authoritarian cruelty, concentration camps, and the reduction of individual worth into what he vividly described as “the wine of the state”— the person crushed and poured out for ideological consumption. Sheen understood that communism was not merely a flawed economic theory but a spiritual catastrophe. It is the logical consequence of a civilization that forgets God: a counterfeit religion built on materialism and despair, offering a false salvation through the collective while destroying the soul it cannot acknowledge. Of all the regimes that have sought communism, socialism, and marxism as their preferred form of government, only a handful remain today and only in modified form due to authoritarian one-party rule, ideological rigidity, removal of private property, internal corruption, external pressures, and structural problems in economic calculations where efficient resource allocations are impossible to meet.

The anniversary of a nation “conceived in liberty” demands more than fireworks and festivities— it calls for an examination of conscience. At the very moment we mark this milestone, avowed Marxists are winning elected office in cities like New York, and the language of socialism is being normalized in public discourse as though it were simply another policy preference rather than an ideology with a long and devastating historical record. These are not fringe developments. They represent a direct challenge to the sovereignty, moral foundation, and spiritual identity of this Nation. Marxism, socialism, and communism fundamentally oppose the true understanding of human dignity— the human person made in God’s image— and the natural moral order. They are materialist ideologies that subordinate the soul and transcendent truth to class struggle, state power, or collective ownership, denying spiritual reality.

Isaiah 45:8

“Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened, and bud forth a saviour: and let justice spring up together: I the Lord have created him.”

Isaiah 45:8 (in the Vulgate: Rorate caeli desuper, et nubes pluant iustum; aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem) is a key prophetic text with strong messianic significance in Catholic tradition, particularly due to its use in the Advent liturgy as the Introit for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and in the Rorate Mass (a votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary during Advent).
The verse’s Vulgate rendering shifted “justice” and “salvation” to “the Just One” (iustum) and “Savior” (Salvatorem), emphasizing Christ as the righteous one descending from heaven and born of the Virgin Mary (the earth opening to bring forth the Savior). Praying for the Holy Father’s intentions does the following to strengthen your mental and spiritual health:
1) strengthens your resolve to be obedient to God. Discipline yourself to do it especially when your internal voice says things to the contrary because this is where you gain control over your greatest gift of free will. Will yourself to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father and achieve metanoia.

2) Sustains Faith in a God who is All Good ( Reminder: Our God cannot bless sin) so have Faith in He who is All Good. Making this practice a habit enables the human psyche to endure difficulties by growing in the knowledge that all things work for the Good of those who love God. It is better to Trust a God who loves us so much He sent His only begotten son to save us than to have the answers to “why?” (As in why should I pray for the popes intentions? or why is God allowing this?).

3) Inspires Hope in a God who is all-knowing and will address those intentions according to His Will while simultaneously reducing your anxiety so you can “let go and let God.” There are many occurrences in this world where we have no control. What we can control, with Gods Grace, are our own thoughts, words and actions. **Take a deep inhale while mentally praying “Lord Jesus, Son of the living God…” not slowly exhale while mentally praying, “…have mercy on me a sinner.
** REPEAT AS NEEDED.

We are skeptical and cynical
in our thoughts saying,

mistake, or ‘there is no way that I can do what He is asking.”

This is the moment that we
should stop and rebuke
any thought that makes us
think that God could possibly be wrong.
God says,
��My ways are not your ways,
say the Lord ”.   Is. 55:8

We should be honored to
think that the Lord of all
Creation would call upon us to suffer in any way for His Glory…,to further witness His Kingdom here on earth.

Can you say YES?
Can you accept what God
is calling you to?
Can you answer:
“Here I am Lord, I come to
do Your will.”
