A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran,
devoted son, husband, father, leader,
mentor, and friend, Captain Tavares
dedicated his life to serving others.
Following his passing from occupational
cancer, Captain Tavares was recognized
with a Line of Duty Death designation
and given full fire service honors after
22 years of dedicated service.
His impact will continue through those
he served, those he led, and the
community he helped protect.
He will never be forgotten.
Rest easy, Dave. We’ll take it from here.

I’ve had a several people reach out, saying my posts are “too depressing” & that they’ll need to unfollow.

If what I share about #ChildhoodCancer feels too heavy, I truly understand. Just unfollow quietly, no announcement or explanation needed. I’m not upset. But that very reaction is the reason this disease stays hidden in the shadows. Most of us don’t want to picture small Children tethered to IV poles, losing their hair, throwing up from chemo, wondering if they’ll see another birthday. It’s painful. It’s easier to scroll past, change the channel, pretend it’s rare or far away. I get it, we all protect our peace.

The difference is, these Children don’t get to scroll away from their own lives. They wake up to needles, scans & fear every single morning. They don’t get a break. They don’t get to look away. They’re still here. Still fighting. Still laughing when they can. Still deserving to be seen, spoken about & never forgotten.

So I’ll keep posting the truth, even the hard parts because someone has to make sure the world doesn’t keep looking away.

Shelter Bio:
On a cold January evening, Dino arrived at the shelter frightened, overwhelmed, and unsure of the world around him. At just 44 pounds, he tried to make himself invisible, curling up beneath a blanket in the back of his kennel where he felt safest. While we may never know Dino’s past, it’s clear that trust doesn’t come easily for him. He is a sensitive dog who will need an experienced, adult only home willing to let him move at his own pace. Dino isn’t looking for instant friendship.. He needs patience, understanding, and the time to feel safe.
The good news? He has truly blossomed since first arriving here. The people who have earned Dino’s trust have discovered a gentle, sweet dog beneath the fear. Little by little, he’s learning that the world isn’t as scary as he once believed. Dino’s future family will need patience, but the reward will be watching him grow into the loving companion we know he can be. He may take a little longer than most, but Dino is absolutely worth it.

It was a day in August 2011 when my black lab began barking incessantly at the breakfast nook window. Peering out, I saw my neighbor tying a dog to my outdoor lead. I hurried outside, and she told me she had found the dog wandering and was afraid he’d be struck by a car.

The dog was terrified, emaciated at less than 20 pounds, and weighed down by a heavy chain around his neck. My heart broke for him. Another neighbor came over, and I grabbed a small collar from when my lab was a puppy. Thankfully, we managed to slide the chain off his neck, but even my collar was far too large. We had to punch a hole two inches further in just to make it fit.
As I cradled this frightened pup in my lap, I made him a promise: he would never be afraid again. Later, we discovered where he had come from, and I realized how brave he truly was. He had escaped from a fenced area two miles away and crossed two dangerous, five-lane highways to reach us.
Whether it was luck or something greater, I know we were meant to find each other. Now, he’s 2 ½ years old, weighs a healthy 50 pounds, and wakes me up every morning with his happy, loving face.

I’m at my dad’s house. He’s on hospice so not much time left. He’s been flying since 1940 and has a lot of pilot friends. This morning they’re buzzing the house for him. Probably illegal but I don’t give a damn. It’s making him smile.
