One chart should change how many think about cancer.

This is U.S. survival data from patients diagnosed between 2011 and 2017.

Local = cancer is only in the organ where it started.

Regional = cancer has reached nearby lymph nodes or tissues.

Distant = cancer has spread to other organs.

Look at what happens to 5-year survival:

The numbers are not current. This data is now several years old.

Since then, treatment has improved significantly for melanoma, lung cancer, kidney cancer, and some blood cancers thanks to immunotherapy and targeted therapies.

Progress has been slower for pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, and metastatic colorectal cancer.

The percentages have changed. The pattern has not.

For many cancers, the biggest difference is not the cancer itself. It’s whether it is found before or after it spreads.
