How is it possible that, over 100 years ago, buildings were constructed—filled with frescoes, sculptures, marble, and stunning details—while today we see simple, plain structures everywhere that cost millions?

The Library of the United States Capitol is one example that invites us to view the past through a different lens. Every ceiling, every column, and every detail seems to tell a story that goes far beyond mere architecture.

Have we truly made progress in every respect, or have we lost something along the way?

Perhaps the question isn’t just how these marvels were built, but rather: how many things from the past have we stopped questioning?

Taken from the Chicago Tribune competition, 1922. The competition set out to design 'the most beautiful office building in the world' and received 263 entries from 23 countries.

If these aren't depictions of already existing and now forgotten towers, it still raises the question of why people of that era always defaulted to this style when designing beauty - and why that connection has been lost entirely by our new world architects.

This was one of the biggest television attractions in 1968. Adjusted for context, fiction comes closer to our actual past than what official history presents to us. According to the official story, this giant tricycle was commissioned in 1896 by the Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company. The stated purpose was a traveling marketing campaign to promote the company's "VIM" brand of pneumatic (air-filled) tires. In the late 19th century, it was displayed primarily at parades and cycling events across New England towns, such as Nashua and Concord, New Hampshire. The rear tire stood 11 feet tall and was 18 inches thick, with a total weight of 1,500 pounds. It took eight people to steer and pedal the tricycle. The mechanism featured a split drive system: four men sat on the left side to power the left wheel, while the other four sat on the right to power the right wheel. The structure was robust enough to carry several additional passengers or guests, in addition to the eight-person pedaling crew, during promotional parades.
That is the story they tell, at least...
But we know how things really work. A bicycle like that would require someone at least twice our size, or larger, and we can get an idea of ​​this by looking at photos of exceptionally tall people from the past. Nowadays, we have bicycles with sturdier tires designed for heavier riders. You just have to connect the dots to see through this little product-promotion tall tale.
