Thanks to the Town & Country Planning Association for commissioning this article on lidos for the latest edition of their Journal. Hope you enjoy the read. 😊

Please enjoy the sounds of a cool lido and of delighted children playing in a pool on a hot summer’s day.
These clips are from Shap and Greystoke pools, two of a cluster of five village pools in Cumbria’s Eden Valley.

This week's column in @mailonsunday is an ode to swimming 🌊
And a gentle plea to protect it.
As a GP, I see every day how much our physical and mental health are intertwined.
For children, learning to swim isn't just a life skill — it is a lifesaving one.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children worldwide.
For adults, the mental health benefits are profound.
So it genuinely worries me that fewer children are learning to swim than ever before.
This is a public health issue, and I don't think we talk about it enough.
There is a massive resurgence in outdoor swimming demand, but local authorities are priced out. ~ 58% (70% in some areas) of English council budgets are consumed by statutory social care, leaving virtually zero capital funding to restore or build community assets like lidos.
Great news: BLU submitted a formal application for Brockwell Lido to be registered as an Asset of Community Value. We' ve now heard from the Head of Strategic Assets at Lambeth Council. He's confirmed that the lido has received Council approval to be an Asset of Community Value.
Thanks to @GR1900 and @thefabians for this excellent paper, just published, which argues for lidos for all and sets out a possible road map. As @andyburnham said yesterday, 'Let's make it happen'.

The Bath Brynaman revival project is running a survey for the local community and potential visitors, until midnight on Saturday 4th July. Please take a few minutes to share your views and support the regeneration of this precious South Wales lido. 👇

Thanks to Swim England for a wonderful Dip at the Docks alongside the Labour Conference in Liverpool. It was great to meet MPs Katie White and Simon Opher - both passionate supporters of their local lidos and of #LidosForAll.
We’re delighted to have been able to join @ChippyLido to celebrate 21 years of community ownership - defying the wind and rain thanks to heated water and the warmth of the love for this very special pool! 🔥
In contrast to yesterday’s sad post about Ramsgate’s lost lido, here’s a great feature just out in the @RICSnews journal, Modus, on the great British lido revival -

This is why Future Lidos exists - to help prevent this happening and bring more heritage lidos back into community use.
Ramsgate Lido then and now - look and weep. And fight for your local lido. ✊
@AmyLesley Please put them in touch - as well as the Lido Toolkit (https://t.co/6dlaSzYT2U) we can offer support, advice and connection to the deep and wide experience that exists across the national network.
Happy Rebirthday(s) to @BecclesLido and @ChippyLido! 15 and 21 years ago respectively, these precious community assets in small towns were taken into community ownership. They've both gone from strength to strength since, and we wish them many, many happy returns! 🎂🥳🎉
Loving this ❤️
