We re-architected the private key control strategy for player accounts on @hytopia the last week.
Player devices will fully custody authority keys that control their on chain SCA (smart contract account). Meaning players fully control their accounts, HYTOPIA nor any other centralized entity has key control.
HYTOPIA servers will never touch the plaintext of these keys.
Technical flow effectively is something along these lines.
Account Creation
1. Player joins HYTOPIA using email, phone or social login (Discord / Twitter)
2. Their game client / device locally provisions a new randomized private key for their player account.
3. The password they choose is used with PBKDF2 & a locally generated salt @ 600,000 iterations & SHA512 digest to encrypt their private key.
4. The ciphertext from the key encryption, along with the public wallet address associated with the generated key, and locally generated salt is sent with their non-sensitive account creation details to HYTOPIA servers for account registration.
5. HYTOPIA servers creates player account, stores their provided ciphertext, KMS encrypts their salt and stores it.
Account Login
1. Player provides their email, phone or does social auth login depending how they setup their account.
2. If email or phone, a 2FA code is sent, they provide this to complete the login. If social auth, they just finish their social auth flow to complete login.
3. Their account credentials, their decrypted salt and their private key ciphertext is sent to the player's device/client.
4. Anytime their key is required for signing a transaction, if it's the first time for their play session (or if they configure to be prompted for a password each time in setttings) they enter their password they chose that encrypted their key. Their salt, password and pbkdf2/sha512@600,000 iterations recovers their key locally on their device to generate signatures for account actions.
In-Game/Marketplace Transactions
1. Player wants to initiate some sort of in-game action. Maybe a marketplace purchase, maybe a cosmetic trade with another player in-game or on marketplace, etc.
2. Player is prompted to enter their password to locally decrypt their private key ciphertext in order to sign the arguments for the action they want to perform. (This all happens automatically behind the scene, the UI is effectively enter password and press a button). If user has already provided password to decrypt for the current play session, they can have their account configured to not prompt them each time - or, continue to prompt them each time depending on their account settings.
3. The decrypted private key holds complete authority and control of their on-chain smart contract account, that is effectively where all the player items, game currency, achievements, etc are held. There's functions for them to delegate or backup recovery of this smart-contract account, but ultimately they hold full control. We provide some alternative backup methods but they still require things like using concat'd recovery question answers as an alt-ciphertext decryption key, etc.
4. That key signs the calldata & arbitrary nonce tied to the transaction they want to make. Could be anything from an on-chain transfer, trade, interaction with our Seaport implementation we have deployed on the HYTOPIA chain to power our marketplace, etc. The calldata, nonce & signature are sent via an API request to HYTOPIA servers. HYTOPIA's relayer submits the transaction to the chain.
5. The signer is recovered from the signature & calldata/nonce in the smart contract wallet to determine if the controlling private key that has authority to approve account actions actually signed the call/transaction request. If so, the transaction completes execution.
6. It's also important to note, HYTOPIA's server APIs are not required for these transactions to be submitted to the HYTOPIA chain, it's just a convenience since we subsidize gas. A player since they control their account private key ultimately can use any RPC & typical library/wallet/metamask/etc to submit these smart contract wallet targeted transactions to the chain.
Annnnnd that's it, that's the present draft of the implementation to solve both player friction but offload account custodying from HYTOPIA's servers.
Hot take: Nearly all of the coming "web3" games will flop hard.
If you're building a mid indie or AAA equivalent game that has it's biggest consumer facing differentiator as "web3" you're ngmi.
Mainstream players literally do not care that you productized a backend technology.
With our beta launch on the horizon, we wanted to dive deep into why we believe there’s a perfect storm brewing where we (@hytopia) can become “The next Minecraft”.
A bold claim, but bear with us as we dive in… This is going to be a long one.

Here's a fun thought mental walkthrough to understand the opportunity @hytopia has relative to all these other "web3 games and studios".
I hope this also serves as a wakeup call to all these other games and studios out there right now that are probably going to flop unless they come to similar realizations..
I also hope this is a wakeup call to all the VCs that backed these studios in the hype cycle but didn't have the foresight to recognize how things will play out from here.
To start, nearly every single game/studio right now that's building with some web3 element is either trying to do something novel with the crypto addition to make a "fun" game experience.. or otherwise just make a "fun" or branded game in general with some crypto addition.
First and foremost. With this approach. These games are ultimately going to have to compete in a pool of many fun games in general (non-web3) to survive long term whether they realize it or not. That is a massively competitive space to build in, let alone adding the crypto element user-experience (UX) which 99% I've seen have gotten wrong in their implementation from a potential mass-adoption standpoint. They may as well have already cut their legs off before they've tried to walk.
These games with web3 elements may have access to a less competitive early adopter pool of crypto-familiar gamers looking for these types of games, but even at scale this is probably less than 10,000 daily active users in the best case. Comparatively to what I've seen with mainstream games & mobile app DAU (daily active user) counts at scale, this is laughably tiny.
"But wait Ark, what about Axie?" - Yes Axie had a peak daily active user count above 2,000,000 players (afaik) - but where's Axie today? Last I checked.. their DAU is < 50,000 players. Their MAU abysmally lower than its peak as well.
Multiplayer games live and die by the sword that is their content, gameplay, and social experience. This compounds the difficulty for games being built that also implement crypto. Players eventually get bored of even the best gameplay experience. Add a value accrual or extraction element like most crypto games have to date, and that falloff curve is even faster when value starts to dwindle or spiral down.
The two most notable and relevant games that have continued to survive the test of time and grow are Minecraft and Roblox. They've created a magical combination of replayability or continuously new content and player social dynamics. Both of these are critical and neither can live long without the other in a multiplayer context.
So with that context, let's focus on @hytopia.
1. Where most games are either having to compete in the highly competitive "fun" games pool, and/or the tiny "crypto games" pool to attract players, we're fortunate to be able to target a huge alternative which is solving critical player and creator issues that have existed within Minecraft.
We're affectively saying "Hey this game has a huge market (170m+ players) and has 10+ years of issues, technical debt, and bottlenecks that still continue to significantly frustrate players and creators" Let's build a better game/platform inspired by the likeness of Minecraft - just like Minecraft was inspired by Infiniminer - and solve all of this once and for all.
Doing this and capturing even 1% of their playerbase is still 1.7m players. Albeit, we think we'll capture significantly more - this just points at the scale of the opportunity with virtually no competition compared to trying to compete with everyone else who are only attracting players by making a "fun" game with overly visible crypto elements.
2. We're only using blockchain/crypto in the most functional context, and nothing more. Pushing crypto/blockchain/ownership as a value prop is still something that mainstream gamers today literally do not care about, and in most cases are turned off by - and while this may change, it's the reality of the state of the environment we're in for the forseeable future.
Our HYTOPIA Chain was built to handle all cross-platform content purchases of cosmetics, specific game content, player to player trading of that content, and in-game currency balance tracking.
We could of used a centralized database and our own developed API here as an alternative, but our own, fast, no-cost-to-us blockchain fundamentally gives us significant benefits over the former.
Primarily, all meaningful in-game content & activity amongst players and creators, as well as our in-game currency are all on chain - verifiable and analyzable by any third party, open for 3rd party devs to build 3rd party applications on top of for tracking the state and behavior of the platform, and more - this is absolutely critical for an open platform where the builders and stakeholders who stand to benefit are dependent on trust of the underlying platform.
Doing this with a centralized DB/API approach would be a significant lift, require us to create our own standards, still retain us as the centralized party that chooses what's visible and what's not, etc.
This isn't an immediate value at all to players or creators, but the long term downstream effects for creators & 3rd party developers will be significant vs alternatives.
3. We're not here to create something 100% new. And let's be honest, all games draw at least a little inspiration from somewhere.
We're here to build a minecraft-inspired player & creator platform that enables what the 100m+ playerbase of Minecraft has been begging for, for years.
This means significantly less guesswork, less a/b testing on critical game mechanics, and more - we know what works, just like the giants before us we take inspiration from the prior giants that proved what worked.
Our mission here is to solve the significant pain and usher in mass adoption through those solutions.
And with that, it should be clear why @hytopia has a significant stand out in opportunity here. We're not trying to be the biggest in web3, we're trying to be THE BIGGEST ugc-based games platform in the world. Rivaling the likes of Roblox, Fortnite UGC, etc.
If you've followed all of this, I hope you understand the scale of what we're trying to do, and how clear the path is.
