@JulianeWriter Much like the difficulty of scaling a small true democracy up to a full government, the Church has become a business. Still doing good work, but with bureaucracy and ledger sheets to make sure you didn't get the church building repossessed due to non-payment of bills.

@JulianeWriter I was recently listening to a nice YouTube video talking about how one of the major reasons Christianity dominated was that no-holds-barred charity. Unfortunately, I suspect scale is part of the problem, having to account for money to keep the lights on.

@brent_waggoner I think a lot of it will vary depending upon where your public school is, what their funding is like, and how much they depend on testing to justify that funding.

@clhubes Dang it... I was happier before I clicked "Show more". I honestly think our son had it a bit better in daycare, with frequent education and constant peer friendship throughout the day, but it was hard on my wife, so she quit her job and they now spend all day together.

@emilykmay Yes, although occasionally with a bit of resentment when it happens repeatedly, and starts to feel less like "I'm doing something nice for them" and more "Ugh... can you do this thing for me because I'm feeling lazy again?" Human nature, I suppose.

@emilykmay We're there now. 3 years old and maybe a dozen words. Good comprehension, just doesn't talk and we can tell he's frustrated. State therapists are overbooked, looking at private options.

@choochoobear Our son is going into speech therapy. It's a frustrating thing in that you want them to do the best that they can on their own, and you don't want to apply undue pressure, would you also want to be sure that they have all of the advantages that they can.

@kkeilts @clhubes Other than the usual Boogeyman of capitalism, I suspect a lot of the expensive weddings has to do with them historically being a way to show off your wealth. And, especially in the United States, everyone wants to show that they have enough money for the fine things in life.

@kkeilts @clhubes Actually, I realize part of my error. Weddings tend to not be expensive. Receptions generally are. And often, those expenses are only reduced by either spending time, or the resources of other people. Or, of course, simply having less. You don't need alcohol, catered food, or DJ.
