Strengthening Migration & Displacement Data in South Sudan
IGAD, in collaboration with South Sudan’s National Bureau of Statistics (@NBS_Statistics), has convened a multi-stakeholder meeting in Juba on migration and displacement statistics.
The 4-day consultation brings together members of the Technical Working Group on Migration and Displacement Statistics to strengthen coordination and technical capacity for producing timely, reliable, and disaggregated data.
The IGAD Head of Mission to the Republic of South Sudan, Dr @Vickyanib01, commended actions by @SouthSudanGov towards increasing the availability of high-quality, timely, and reliable disaggregated migration and displacement data.
The consultations will deliver a technical draft of the country's Migration Profile, standardized glossary of migration terms used across MDAs, and agreed-upon surveys/administrative improvements ahead of the upcoming reporting cycle.
Recovery isn’t a project. It’s a partnership.
Government leads. Communities define. Interagency supports. Stakeholders align.
Coordination isn’t a meeting. It’s the foundation. #Resilience
Following the 28th Horn of Africa Initiative meeting in Washington, D.C., where I called for borderlands to be placed at the centre of sustainable development, I today received Mandera County Governor H.E. @MohamedAkhalif and the Ambassador of Kenya to Ethiopia, H.E. Galma Boru in our offices in Addis Ababa.
Our discussion focused on the Ethiopia-Kenya consultations on the Horn of Africa Gateway Project, convened by IGAD, and its role in connecting communities, expanding trade, and creating opportunity in cross border areas.
With support from @Pandemic_Fund, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development delivered molecular testing reagents and PPE to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute on 24 April 2026.
Part of a broader, strategic package combining critical supplies with targeted technical support to Member States.
This integrated approach strengthens genomic testing capacity for accurate, timely diagnosis while advancing research, innovation, and the effective use of advanced molecular technologies.
The intervention reinforces public health surveillance through systematic pathogen and variant tracking, supported by technical assistance in laboratory systems, workforce capacity, quality assurance, and data use.
Aligned with regional and global health security priorities, it enhances early warning systems, improves pathogen characterization, and enables coordinated cross-border responses.
Reflecting @IGADsecretariat's commitment to resilient health systems and stronger regional collaboration to prevent, detect, and respond to current and future public health threats.
In Africa, border regions are too often where poverty, fragility, and neglect converge, while in more developed parts of the world, borders are where connectivity, growth, and opportunity thrive.
This must concern us.
At the 28th Horn of Africa Initiative meeting on prioritising corridors to enhance trade and connectivity, I reiterated that borderlands must be placed at the centre of sustainable development in our region.
Corridors must not only move goods. They must also create opportunity for the communities that live along them.
Pleased to discuss #DurableSolutions progress in South Sudan with Laila Bourhil, @UN Head of Integrated Office 🇸🇸, today in anticipation of the 2nd Steering Committee. @IGADsecretariat stands committed to supporting the Government of South Sudan.

H.E. @DrWorkneh highlights the resilience and leadership of women across our communities and institutions as he reflects on this International Women’s Day 2026.
Celebrating women’s leadership across IGAD this International Women’s Day. Our Gender Manager Amina Farah (@xubbifarah), reminds us that protecting rights, upholding justice and turning commitments into action is everyone’s responsibility.
#IWD2026#WomensRights#GenderEquality #IWPS
Growing up and through my career, I’ve witnessed the resilience and determination of women who held families, governments, and communities together, often in the face of great challenges. Their strength continues to inspire us all to advancing women’s leadership across the region.
Through initiatives such as the IGAD Women Forums on Peace, Agriculture, Digital Security and Artificial Intelligence, and Land Governance, alongside the IGAD Gender Strategy, we continue to expand opportunities and elevate women’s voices across the IGAD region.
On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where women lead and thrive.

Residents of Sagante Jaldesa and Mwangaza Primary School in Marsabit County received food support from National Lands Commission C.E.O. Kabale Tache Arero, as prolonged drought continues to push families to the brink of starvation. The intervention comes amid growing concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in northern Kenya, where thousands of households face acute food insecurity following consecutive failed rainy seasons.
