The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has launched an investigation into the recent Negombo Prison violence, while also probing reports of torture and ill‑treatment of prisoners transferred to other facilities. In a letter copied to the President and key ministers, the HRCSL expressed concern after its Rapid Response Unit was denied entry to Welikada Prison on July 7, stressing its legal mandate to inspect prisons at any time. The Commission directed the Commissioner General of Prisons to grant unimpeded access to HRCSL staff and fully cooperate with the ongoing probe.

The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association has alleged that Rs. 7 billion in public funds are being wasted on the government’s new Metro Bus initiative.
Chairman of the Association, Gamunu Wijeratne, charged that the Metro Bus scheme is implemented by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) under another name and warned it would further erode the country’s passenger transport system.
“It is because of the SLTB that passenger transport in Sri Lanka was destroyed. Now, by introducing Metro buses, this government is doing the same again. This is how the Treasury is being wiped out. This is a national crime,” Wijeratne said.
He argued that the new buses will not address systemic inefficiencies in public transport, but instead replicate past failures while draining taxpayer money. (Newswire)
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has stressed that the Indian Ocean must remain a peaceful region and should not become part of any ongoing military conflicts.
Speaking to NDTV, Premadasa said the Indian Ocean has repeatedly been declared a peace zone and must continue to remain free from hostilities.
His comments come as tensions in the region escalate following the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in international waters off Sri Lanka and the arrival of another Iranian vessel, IRIS Busheher, which has been allowed to dock in Trincomalee.

Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, met with the Rt. Hon. David Lammy, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Colombo for wide-ranging discussions on democratic governance, trade expansion, and bilateral humanitarian cooperation.
“If you’re so confident that this government is popular, hold the provincial council elections,” Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa challenges the government over delays in conducting the polls despite claims that it holds a 65% approval rating.
Good questions by @sajithpremadasa . The officials couldn’t answer the questions. He pointed out normally you need 0.36 KG coal to generate 1KWpH, but with these new shipments it’s much higher.
