As part of our ongoing efforts to promote #ZeroWaste, #circulareconomy solutions and decentralized organic #waste management, @GayoUganda conducted a monitoring visit to Ento Organic Farm under the Community-Based Organic #Waste Diversion through Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming initiative.
The visit provided an #opportunity to assess the progress of the supported #BSF pilot, understand the early results being achieved, document emerging #opportunities and challenges, and identify lessons that can inform the continued implementation and potential replication of community-based organic #waste management approaches.
At Ento Organic Farm-Uganda , we observed progress beyond BSF production itself. The farm is developing a market for BSF frass, expanding its customer base and strengthening its capacity to conduct #BSF training beyond its immediate operational area. The pilot has also seen increased participation from farmers, demonstrating the growing potential of #BSF systems to connect organic #waste recovery with agricultural production and sustainable farming practices.
Our support to the pilot has contributed to strengthening equipment, training capacity, marketing and customer acquisition, product development and broader enterprise capacity.
These investments are helping create a stronger foundation for market development, farmer engagement and knowledge transfer, including the potential to take #BSF training to communities that may have limited access to technical expertise.
As implementation continues, we will continue monitoring progress across the supported pilots, documenting measurable outcomes and strengthening learning around organic #waste diversion, #BSF production, agricultural applications, markets and green livelihoods.

Strengthening #WastePicker Organisation and Inclusion.
Earlier last week, we held a second engagement with leaders of the informal #waste pickers as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the organisation, recognition and inclusion of #waste pickers within Uganda’s waste management and #circulareconomy systems.
The discussion, built on earlier consultations that brought attention to key issues affecting #waste pickers, including formal recognition, occupational health and safety, social protection, cooperative development, access to markets and integration into municipal waste services.
A key focus of this next phase was strengthening the foundation of the waste picker association by establishing its leadership structures and collecting the necessary legal and registration documentation.
These steps will support the development of a more organised and formally recognised association, creating a stronger platform through which #waste pickers can collectively engage with local authorities, #wastemanagement actors and other stakeholders.
This work goes beyond recognition. It is about creating practical pathways for informal #waste workers to participate meaningfully in resource recovery and urban #wastemanagement, while strengthening access to capacity building, #financing, enterprise development, #markets and safer working conditions.
As Uganda advances its transition towards more inclusive circular economy and Zero #Wastesystems, recognising #wastepickers as economic actors and essential contributors to urban #resource recovery is critical. Their inclusion can help connect environmental action with livelihoods, resource efficiency and more resilient communities.
This engagement marks another step towards building a more organised, recognised and inclusive #wastepicker movement one in which those already contributing to Uganda’s #circulareconomy have a stronger voice in shaping the systems they are part of.
