I have also met young innovators developing solutions to challenges faced by farmers, addressing traffic concerns and improving home security.
Commercialising research and industrialising prototypes and proven ideas are among the pathways to growth envisaged under Uganda’s Ten-Fold Growth Strategy. Later, we will hold a high-level strategic meeting to assess the university’s strengths, challenges and opportunities, and agree on how best to advance this agenda.

Gulu University Legal Officer, Counsel Omara Moses, delivered an insightful presentation titled “Mastering Commercial Agreement Drafting in the Age of AI: Practical Skills for Modern Lawyers” at the Uganda Law Society Conference for Advocates of Northern Uganda, held at Acholi Inn on 26 October 2026.
His presentation explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance commercial contract drafting, identify potential legal risks, and improve efficiency in legal practice. He emphasised that while AI offers significant opportunities to transform the legal profession, it cannot replace the professional judgment, ethical responsibility, confidentiality, and accuracy required of lawyers.
Counsel Omara also examined the evolving relationship between AI and legal practice, highlighting the importance of embracing technological innovation while preserving the wisdom, critical thinking, and sound judgment that underpin effective legal service delivery.
His presentation reflects Gulu University’s commitment to legal excellence, innovation, and continuous professional development, while encouraging legal practitioners to adopt emerging technologies responsibly.
“The future belongs not to lawyers who compete with machines in producing words, but to lawyers who use technology to exercise better judgment, deliver greater value, and uphold the rule of law,” Counsel Omara noted.
Gulu University officials on 23 October 2026 held the first planning meeting for the institution’s 25th anniversary celebrations, marking the beginning of preparations for the Silver Jubilee.
During the meeting, Dr. Asaf Adebua, the University’s Chief Planning and Development Officer, presented a proposed plan outlining activities and other arrangements for the celebrations to the Central Organising Committee (COC).
The committee is chaired by Eng. Moses Onono and Deputised by Canon Dr. Gladys Oyat, who chair the University Council Committees on Planning and Development, and Students’ Affairs, respectively.
Dr. Adebua said the university requires more than UGX 1 billion to organise a successful Silver Jubilee celebration and achieve its planned targets.
The proposed activities include international conferences, public lectures, documenting the contributions of past and current members of the university community, and a sports gala for university alumni, among other engagements.
Eng. Onono encouraged university staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders to actively participate in the celebrations, noting that the Silver Jubilee would feature a series of activities. He also called on members of the public to prepare to support the celebrations, adding that the resource mobilization team would soon reach out to them to seek contributions towards making the event a success.
Trained staff at Gulu University led 19 students through a design-thinking process aimed at refining their ideas and strengthening their innovative potential. The programme culminated in six mentored teams pitching their innovations before a panel of three judges.
Outstanding teams were recognised and awarded support to continue testing, refining, and developing their ideas into practical solutions. This was part of the three day training from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment from 14thto 16th October 2026.
In his remarks, Professor Collins Okello, Dean of the College of Agriculture at Gulu University, highlighted the university’s efforts to establish a functional incubation hub in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and other relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.
The proposed hub is intended to serve students and communities across the Acholi sub-region by providing a supportive environment for nurturing innovative ideas, promoting entrepreneurship, and developing practical solutions to local challenges. The initiative is expected to strengthen the region’s innovation ecosystem, create opportunities for young innovators, and contribute to sustainable community development and economic growth.
