It is with deep sadness we share news of the passing of Etienne d’Aboville, a pioneering figure in Scotland’s Independent Living Movement and GCIL’s first CEO. Under his leadership, GCIL grew from a small grassroots initiative into Scotland’s largest Centre for Inclusive Living.
His influence reached far beyond GCIL — from helping to establish organisations such as Glasgow Disability Alliance, to championing the reopening of the Independent Living Fund in Scotland. Etienne’s voice was one of clarity, conviction, and compassion.
We also shared our new 30th anniversary report, capturing the impact of independent living over 3 decades and the future we’re building together.

Lyn Pornaro, CEO of @DEScotTweets now speaking compellingly about her own lifelong fight as a disabled person against discrimination and being ignored. Disabled people are still having to fight for their #HumanRights.
These proposals must be scrapped and the Government must listen to the millions of people impacted, including more than 4000 in my Liverpool West Derby constituency.
