This morning, the Russians once again struck the Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv with a drone. They attacked an ordinary pharmaceutical warehouse in Sumy with drones. Tragically, one person was killed. My condolences to the family and loved ones. In Dnipro, they struck a communications facility. Six people were injured as a result of these attacks.

Overnight, the Russians launched 135 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 50 of them jet-powered. Kyiv, the Dnipro, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia regions came under attack. And among the main targets of these terrorists, as always, are ordinary residential buildings, critical infrastructure – everything that makes up normal everyday life. There are power outages in some communities. Our services are working at the impact sites.

It is important that Ukraine is not left alone against this terror. This week alone, the Russians have used more than 1,900 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 25 missiles against Ukraine. More than 800 of the drones were jet-powered, and Russia must be held accountable for this escalation.

Today, Friedrich Merz @bundeskanzler – Federal Chancellor of Germany – is visiting Kyiv. A leader of a country that consistently demonstrates leadership in protecting the lives of Ukrainians from Russian strikes. We are grateful for all the support, and today we are preparing decisions to give us in Ukraine, and all of Europe, greater capabilities to defend ourselves. There will be important agreements between Ukraine and Germany. Russia must be stopped together. Thank you to everyone who is helping.

The soldiers here come from very different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common: the decision to join the military and start over. In the photos are soldiers of the @93Alcatraz specialized infantry battalion, made up of former inmates. Some came here looking for "something to do", while others returned to Donetsk region to defend their own homes. Ahead of the Day of Defenders and Defendresses of Ukraine, we spoke with the soldiers about their experiences and motivations.

In the first photo is "Feniks" the company’s chief sergeant. He joined Alcatraz when the battalion was just being built from scratch. He says he wanted to try something new and work with people who had no previous military experience. Feniks himself has been in the military since 2018.

«It was interesting to find out what kind of people they were, how to work with them, and what to expect from them. And the results speak for themselves. Many see their service here as a chance to change their lives: rebuild connections with their families, gain new knowledge, develop themselves, and eventually, if they have the desire and ability, take on more responsibility and move into leadership positions. But everyone starts with combat».

Today, the chief sergeant says, Alcatraz has not only infantry and assault troops, but is also actively developing its drone component. The soldiers are eager to learn new things, while some already have experience from previous service.

«I spent two months in the infantry, then I became a guide. I was doing that for a long time until I ran into a sabotage and reconnaissance group» – says a soldier with the call sign "Psikh". He joined Alcatraz two years ago after serving a prison sentence and immediately became a platoon commander.

He readily recalls his encounter with a russian sabotage and reconnaissance group, because he now shares that experience with his subordinates and teaches them how to withstand such situations based on what he himself went through:

«I got the guys into position and was heading back. There were five m***erf**kers. They were heading toward Dolha Balka – they had gotten more than five kilometers into our rear. There was a dense tree line, and they were wearing our uniforms. I was heading back when the first bullet hit me in the arm, then another hit me in the side. I was lucky that I suddenly dropped – that’s what saved me»

He says he managed to hide behind a tree and get his first-aid kit. While treating himself, he overheard the occupiers talking and realized they were going to check whether he was dead. He quickly understood that he would have to fight his way out. He managed to shoot three russians, while the other two escaped.

He is convinced that only good training and preparation saved his life.

"Psikh" says he does take a soldier’s previous experience into account – both life experience and military experience. But he adds that he only begins to trust a soldier after combat missions, once everyone has had a chance to show what they are capable of.

«For example, I trust "Zhuk", the platoon commander, because he’s been through a lot too».

"Zhuk" has also been in the battalion for almost two years, just like his comrade. During that time, he has taken part in numerous combat missions, both as part of the battalion itself and alongside attached brigade units. He says he feels he has found his place in Alcatraz.

«People are different, and anyone can have a criminal record. What matters here is what kind of person you are. There’s no such thing as "status" or anything like that. We all fight here, we’re all in this together, and we all stick together. First and foremost, we have to give a person knowledge and experience. Whether they choose to learn and put it into practice is up to them. What matters here is what kind of person you are».

From July through September, russian occupiers continued assault attempts and infiltration efforts within the 93rd Kholodnyi Yar Brigade’s area of responsibility, in the areas of Novopavlivka, Pavlivka, Pryiut, Torske, Malo-Raikske, Krasnyi Kut, Toretske, Petrivka, and Novohryhorivka.

However, none of the enemy’s assault attempts succeeded. The enemy was regularly detected, engaged, and destroyed using all available means: UAVs, artillery, and the efforts of reconnaissance company soldiers directly in small-arms combat.

The brigade’s units also continued to hold their positions in the Rusyn Yar area, preventing russian forces from advancing further.

During reconnaissance and search operations, soldiers from the mechanized, motorized infantry, and infantry battalions added more captured enemy personnel to the prisoner exchange pool.

In some areas of the front, Kholodnyi Yar warriors operated in coordination with neighboring units, including battalions of the 425th Assault Regiment "Skelia". Through joint efforts, they managed to hold back the enemy in the areas of the settlements of Raiske, Petrivka, Pryiut, Torske, Toretske, Krasnyi Kut, Pavlivka, and Novohryhorivka.

As a result, russian forces in the Kholodnyi Yar warriors’ area of responsibility have failed to achieve even the slightest success in recent months. All their attempts to seize new areas of our territory have ended in failure.
