Health security is economic security.
The ongoing #Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda is a reminder that investing in surveillance, workforce development, and preparedness is not optional—it is essential for protecting lives, trade, and economic stability.

AFENET Welcomes New Board Chair!
AFENET warmly welcomes Prof. Ernest Kenu, Program Director of the Ghana FETP, as the new Chair of the AFENET Board, announced at the AGM in Kampala, Uganda. He succeeds Dr. Lazarus Kuonza, Program Director of the South Africa FETP, whose tenure concludes after nearly two years of dedicated leadership.
We sincerely thank Dr. Kuonza for his commitment and service to the network and wish him continued success.
Facing evolving public health challenges, Prof. Kenu highlights the need for resilience, innovation, and stronger resource mobilization to ensure AFENET’s sustainability and impact across Africa: "Together, we can position AFENET as the go-to public health partner on the continent."
Let’s keep building a stronger, sustainable network for a healthier Africa!
“It is an honour to join Ghana Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) at this important milestone as we celebrate service, resilience, and excellence in an increasingly complex world. Congratulations to Ghana FETP for your consistency in hosting this scientific conference year after year.
This year’s theme is especially timely. We are living in a defining moment where public health threats evolve faster than ever before. Artificial Intelligence has transformed innovation, reshaping how we analyse data and respond to outbreaks. AI has strengthened early warning systems, enabling earlier alerts and faster action. From contact networks to outbreak response, AI is positioning public health to redirect limited resources to areas of greatest impact.
AFENET remains committed to integrating AI into public health. But let me emphasize: AI does not replace field epidemiologists. Rather, it amplifies your voice and strengthens your impact. In this new era, field epidemiologists must ask the right questions and translate analytics into practical action.
To the Ghana FETP and today’s graduates—congratulations. You have received one of the best public health training in the world. May you carry forward the knowledge, skills, and the right attitude to continue protecting the health of our communities.” - Dr. Simon Antara- Director AFENET at the 8th Ghana FELTP Scientific Conference.
