Cool to have my work mentioned in this recent piece on the CA Governor's race - Dem candidate Xavier Becerra now exploiting a major campaign finance loophole to get his message out.

Jasmine Crockett red box and James Talarico red box
Crockett specifically calling on outside groups to do Spanish advertising in South Texas contrasting her as a fighter against MAGA vs. Talarico taking money from the Adelsons and returning to Austin during a 2021 quorum break.
Discussion in NRSC v. FEC keeps returning to how the rise of super PACs has harmed parties. That's clearly true and underscores the need for reform, including ways to strengthen parties. But that's a job for Congress.

The Supreme Court's track record in campaign finance cases since Citizens United has been the explosion of dark money, super PAC corruption, and cratering confidence in American democracy.

Interesting to see justices at NRSC v. FEC press Noel Francisco on future challenges to campaign finance rules. This is making explicit how the dynamic at the Court has worked. Each challenged law is usually treated in isolation, but the reality it’s a progressive chipping away of the rules.
The Supreme Court today is hearing a major case on the First Amendment rights of political parties and the campaign finance system.
Earlier, Bob Bauer and I published this essay on the case, arguing that enabling more money to flow through the parties, rather than outside groups, would be better for the democratic process.

Interesting to see my research on campaign coordination cited in an amicus brief for the upcoming Supreme Court case in NRSC v. FEC. It's certainly true that current campaign finance laws are not fit for purpose. Whether that means they should be shelved altogether? Less clear.
New research: Campaigns & interest groups aren’t just parallel players—they coordinate in plain sight.
Through “redboxing,” campaigns signal ad strategy to outside groups, shaping $170M+ in spending (2020 cycle). Legal? Yes. Independent? 🤔
