Lance Corporal Nigel Robert Smith of 2 PARA married Wendy on 3 April 1982. Less than a month later, he deployed to the Falklands with the British Task Force. They never had a honeymoon.

On 28 May 1982, during the Battle of Goose Green, Nigel was killed while advancing with D Company after what appeared to be an Argentine surrender turned into a deadly burst of gunfire. He was just 21 years old.

For Britain, Goose Green was a historic victory.

For Wendy, it was the end of a marriage that had lasted only three weeks.

The Iranian regime and its IRGC is determined to stay in power. It knows from experience that the UK has been incapable of resisting it, collapses easily under their pressure and in back-channel ‘diplomacy’ has consistently ceded entirely to all of their demands.

To the IRGC, (who the UK still refuses to proscribe) the UK is a very weak link in the so-called coalition that (on paper) opposes them and is only very reluctantly allowing the USA to use its UK-located air bases in their bombing campaign.

It may be that the threat of terrorism on the UK mainland by IRGC-sponsored and led groups (who effortlessly cross the channel) will force the new Manchester (sometimes)-based UK ‘cabinet’ to put up the white flag again and refuse the US access to the airfields.

It’s hard to sure, but the odds seem stacked in the IRGC’s favour here…

Fun fact.

The term "fifth column" means having sympathisers, spies, or other people loyal to you inside an enemy nation or political party.

It comes from the Spanish Civil War.

In 1936 General Emilio Mola was marching on Madrid.

He had four columns of troops marching towards the city.

But he said the most decisive factor was the "fifth column" already inside the city - locals who sympathised with the Nationalists.
