Nor would a true Hellenist acknowledge the historical reality that even those ignorant enough to regard the Eastern Roman Empire as a Greek state tend to place the emergence of its predominantly Greek character much later, following the loss of the territories acquired under Justinian, including Africa, the Levant and Syria, after which Hellenic culture became increasingly dominant.

However, the reality is that after the conquest of the small Hellenic city states of Antiquity by the Macedonians, there was never again an independent Hellenic administration. After the Macedonians came the Romans, and later the Turks, who ruled the descendants of these communities throughout history. The loss of what might be described as the ancient Greek genetic heritage through subsequent Slavic and Albanian migrations is an entirely separate matter.
