Predicting Suicide Death
A recent study looking at >2M Americans presenting to ERs with MH concern shows the difficulty of "predicting suicide" - we can't predict suicide to help guide important clinical decisions.
The problem: Sensitivity vs PPV

👉Low screening participation rates explain only small part of the risk of more advanced breast cancer in women who use mental health (MH) services.
👉More study is needed to understand possible mechanisms contributing to more advanced breast cancer in women living with MH conditions.
👉Health systems need strategies to ensure that women living with MH conditions enjoy population gains in breast cancer outcomes.

check out our new paper led by @GSara_InforMH NSW pop'n linkage data ➡️ health inequities in women mental health service users Dx with breast cancer 📢"Health systems need strategies to ensure that women living with MH conditions enjoy population gains in breast cancer outcomes".
This incredible study looked at emergency department visits in children for suicidality (attempts & ideation) before & during the pandemic and found, unsurprisingly:
a) kids more likely suicidal during school months
b) school closures associated with DECREASED ER visits

Only 30% of NSW mental health service users have recent BreastScreen, but 53% of other NSW women. Of nearly 40,000 service users aged 50-74, that's 7,000 fewer than expected. Women over 60 had the lowest rates @EquallyWell_AU@jackie_curtisAU

Tracking vaccine preventable hospitalisation for those living with MH conditions is shining a light into the corners where change needs to happen. Well done to some of our Equally Well supporters and the team on this new research @GSara_InforMH@jackie_curtisAU@patrickvgould
@timheffo Agree Tim … We hope that good local data will help break down this huge problem and show areas for action … lots of possible gains with greater vaccine equity @EquallyWell_AU
MH service users avg 9 years younger when admitted, largest increases (4-6x) in 35-65 year olds. Increases for all conditions including hepatitis B, pneumonias and herpes zoster
NSW mental health service users have 3.2x risk of vaccine-preventable hospital admission, including 2x risk admission for COVID19. We tracked 19 conditions in 418k people over 6 yrs: open access at

Will be diving in deeper later, but numbers for July 2022 are out.
July, generally in the US **not confounded** by school (most school is out in July in the US) did not show any pandemic changes from baseline, and a drop in 2022.
Our paper out today : an improved method using additional ICD Codes and text analysis more than doubles sensitivity in detecting self-harm presentations in NSW ED data
https://t.co/SomWmsL5nU
We added additional ICD codes for medications commonly used in overdose, and phrases indicating self-harm. Revised estimates are consistent with hospital diagnoses
