NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.
Ukraine is Europe!
We stand by Ukraine.
We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor.
Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.
As President Reagan once said, “Peace is not just the absence of war.” We’re talking about just and lasting peace—freedom, justice, and human rights for everyone. A ceasefire won’t work with Putin. He has broken ceasefires 25 times over the last ten years. A real peace is the only solution.
Today, utility-scale batteries paired with solar PV are already competitive with new coal plants in some countries like India
In just the next few years, batteries + solar will be cheaper than new natural gas plants in the US & new coal in China https://t.co/79VDGVnidi
Free carbon allowances for EU industrial companies are being phased out, but inconsistencies remain. Read the analysis by @GSgaravatti.

Shocking to see China so far ahead the EU and the US in electrification rate, especially as EVs don't seem to be the main driving factor.
A high electrification rate means huge potential for rapid emissions cuts as China moves away from coal power generation.

.@Bruegel_org EU gas import tracker:
- total EU gas imports from Russia for the second quarter in the row exceeded LNG imports from the US;
- weekly EU gas imports are below seasonal levels;
- EU gas storage is 94% full.

As the proposed new structure of the European Commission puts, both, #competition and #transition policy in the hands of @Teresaribera, I thought to re-share our conceptual paper on how the two areas interplay.
Our latest op-ed in @POLITICOEurope makes the case for why the European Green Deal must focus on external decarbonization efforts. Without it, we risk undermining domestic and global climate targets. With @Tagliapietra_S and @GSgaravatti

When Haussmann transformed Paris into the city it is today, it involved the planting of 600,000 trees — and building wide boulevards to accommodate them.
There's a reason history's greatest city planners placed such heavy emphasis on street trees...
Fossil fuels generated 17% less in H1-2024 than in H1-2023.
A majority of this fall came from only a few Member States, with Germany seeing the largest drop.

.@Bruegel_org EU gas import tracker:
-weekly EU imports decreased, driven by lower LNG and NO imports;
-pipeline imports from Russia exceed 2023 level due to record flows via Turkstream;
-reverse flows into UA are up;
-EU gas storage at 85% capacity.
