✨Welcome to the GU Tenement Society!✨
We are a newly-founded club, aiming to give students the opportunity to explore Glasgow and learn about the city's built and cultural heritage. Whether you're interested in Glaswegian history /1
The Steamie. Whitevale Baths, Dennistoun, built in 1901 it had separate men and women’s swimming pools, hot baths, showers and a wash house ‘Steamie’ with 66 washing stalls. The men’s pool could be drained to create a 500 seater concert venue! Amazing! #glasgow#thesteamie
There's a shady character on Queen Street.
Twice in the year, around the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the sunrise shines right along Ingram Street, turning the Iron Duke, his steed, Copenhagen, and even his traffic cone hat into a shadowy work of art.

✨Friday Fun✨ What's in a name? Let's travel back in time to explore where the name Kelvingrove Park originated. Currently a people's favourite, it carries a loaded history in its name: a linen merchant, a long-gone mansion & a skate park!🛹 #Glasgow https://t.co/uTn00YKi8P

#MomentsofHorror in #Glasgow: As it’s #Halloween today here’s Glasgow’s most haunted door case at the appropriately named Castle Chambers. It’s got all the little #Lovecraft touches, the empty eye sockets and the screaming devils on console brackets above = scary stuff…😱👻🎃👿!
A great photo from August 1954 showing the new Woolworth's shop at corner of Langlands Road and Golspie Street being fitted out by Leeds based shop fitting firm John Curtis & Son. The building had originally been built as Govan EU Church.
🚨Isle of Bute trip has been postponed🚨
Apologies to everyone who's already reserved their place, but we'll be postponing the event to next weekend (29 or 30 October) due to unforeseen circumstances 😥
We'll inform you of the new date soon. Sorry for the last-minute change! 🙏
Life was much simpler back then, but it was still all about keeping appearances! 💁🏻♀️
If you haven’t seen a wally close already, don’t worry! You can spot them all over Glasgow and we may even take a peek at some point 👀
In the meantime, check out @TnmntTiles & @BehindTiles!
⚡️FUN FACT⚡️Wally Closes🟩
Wally closes have always been a major thing in #Glasgow tenements. Wally is a Scots word for ceramic & is used in all sorts of contexts: wally dugs 🐕 (traditional dog-shaped ceramic figures); wallies as in somebody’s fake🦷; or feeling peely wally 🥴
Back in the days, you would measure your neighbours’ status based on how clean they kept the close 🧹 This was done on a rota basis & if the close wasn’t spotless after you cleaned it, it would suggest that neither would your house! 🏠😱
