1.3 million needless deaths per year. A shocking and disheartening number. But how much of this could be prevented by screening for, and correcting, poor vision? Hopefully we will be able to test this hypothesis soon. If you can’t see the car until it’s too late, it’s too late…

A5: The good news is that awareness that poor vision is a major issue is rising. Groups that benefit from a common solution is a road we should travel. Better vision helps students, drivers, workers, the elderly, etc.. Gov. collaboration with MoH, MoE, MoT, Industry, is critical.
A4: Long term sustainability is key to the success of solving this issue. Let’s determine where costs can be cut, quality maintained, and services still offered in areas where Optoms, MDs and PhDs do not want to live long term - like remote BoP areas. #WorldSightDay
Q4: With funding challenges in today’s new normal, what key issues do we need to prioritize on our journey to bring good vision to everyone, everywhere?
#DevexFocus on #WorldSightDay · @SeeChange4all@Devex
A3: Creation of the infrastructure capable of delivering that care is the main issues. We need to look at, and embrace, task shifting like the majority of other healthcare areas have done. We also need to better communicate the benefits of eye health intervention and eyeglasses.
Q3: A recent report found that women and people with disabilities have less access to critical eye care. How can we help improve access for these groups?
#DevexFocus on #WorldSightDay · @SeeChange4all@Devex
A2: Self-refraction (using the patients natural ability to determine their best visual acuity) is becoming more accepted and understood. It’s use in solving refractive error for the BoP will be critical to addressing the need in a timely manner. #WorldSightDay
Q2: Eye health telemedicine has gained speed during the pandemic. What other innovative trends or changes should we expect in eye health as a result of COVID-19?
#DevexFocus on #WorldSightDay · @SeeChange4all@Devex
The biggest issue for us was the interruption in stock of eyeglasses. That has been resolved, and operations are ramping up again. Updating training to include precautionary measures to help limit the spread of the virus are also critical in future endeavors. #WorldSightDay
Q1: COVID-19 has greatly impacted vision work, particularly among the most marginalized communities. How are eye health practitioners working to overcome these challenges?

“Throughout history, inventors and entrepreneurs have harnessed the power of innovation to help the less fortunate around the globe,” said Andrei Iancu, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO.
