Teacher jailed for corruption:

A former Musina High School teacher, Shoni Theodor Maoka (59), has been sentenced to an effective seven years’ direct imprisonment after the Morebeng Regional Court convicted him on four counts of corruption.

The court imposed a combined 22-year sentence, but ordered the terms to run concurrently.

Evidence showed that between September and December 2015, Maoka accepted R45,000 to facilitate the placement of temporary residence permit stickers and entry stamps in the passports of foreign nationals, enabling them to remain in South Africa illegally.

The NPA argued that Maoka abused his position as a public servant for personal gain and that a custodial sentence was appropriate given the seriousness of the offences. Limpopo DPP Adv. Ivy Thenga said the conviction reflects the NPA’s commitment to tackling corruption and protecting the integrity of state institutions.
