Padres went from one of the lowest K rate offenses in 2025 to the 10th highest K rate this year. It’s not all because Arraez left too. Coming into today the K% of almost every player has increased

Laureano 24.4% ➡️ 31.7%
Merrill 22.4% ➡️ 24.5%
Sheets 19.6% ➡️ 20.9%
Manny 19.3% ➡️ 23.1%
Fermin 18.7% ➡️ 21.2%
Tatis 18.7% ➡️ 22.8%
Xander 17.0% ➡️ 17.5%

Even guys who weren’t here last year their K rates have increased too

Castellanos 22.6% ➡️ 28.8%
France 16.9% ➡️ 20.0%
Andujar 14.4% ➡️ 16.8%

Only Crone is down from 20.8% to 20.2%. Now striking out doesn’t bother me as long as it comes with the trade off of more power. The Padres are slugging LESS than they did last year and that’s without Arraez on the roster. Approach is an organizational thing and last two seasons Vic Rod and the org prioritized contact and an opposite field approach. It didn’t work last year but it did in 2024. This year is there an overall approach? Souza has said he wants the team to hit line drives but what is he doing to implement it? These are fair questions. This team has become one of the freest swinging teams in baseball and when you pair that with the elevated Ks it’s not a fun offense to watch.
