THE COMPLETE KUBRICK is OUT OF STOCK!
Some people complained about the price when it was announced (even at 50% off), they even called Criterion "the end of cinema", seems it was just a minority.
This happened in my screening. Close to half the theater came in late with at least 20 folks coming in 30 min late. I will say the app has a clear section on your ticket that states it starts with almost zero ads but I get its frustrating after years of 30 min ad sections.
Digger in Vista Vision at AMC Theaters Grove has NO commercials or trailers. It starts right on time. People were walking in 45 minutes past the start. 💀
Just got back from the Sixth Sense surprise double feature with the world premiere of Remain at Beyond Fest. Feel so lucky to consume art along with an audience and its craftsmen like Shyamalan & James Newton Howard. Director Jon Chu did a fantastic job delving into the process.

Debates over legal liability for AI agents always remind me a bit of the early spring gun cases, like Bird v. Holbrook, 30 E.R. 911 (C.P. 1828). AI is new in a lot of ways, but legal liability for harms conducted by machines programmed to act on their own is not the new part.
NEW from me:
Over the last four years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of major recessions.
How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵
All deal terms are now filed with the court. No more speculation.
Overarching critiques: No structural remedies, despite months of chest-thumping that they must be included.
All other commitments expire in just 5 years. That’s the blink of an eye. A countdown to a cliff.

‘LA BOLA NEGRA’ has won the People's Choice Award at TIFF.
Previous winners include ‘American Fiction’, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘Hamnet’, ‘Nomadland’, ‘Jojo Rabbit’, ‘La La Land’ and ‘12 Years a Slave’.
The first runner-up was ‘I Play Rocky’.
Earlier today, @nytimes publisher A.G. Sulzberger wrote that no modern president has been more hostile to a free press than Donald Trump.
Then, right on cue, the president proceeds to prove his point.
I suspect this will eventually reach the Supreme Court, because the implication is so concerning.
Historically, warrantless border searches were permitted because you might be smuggling something in. But with cellphones, there’s a qualitative difference compared to a suitcase.
#LaBolaNegra at #tiff26: A love letter to art, queer folk, &affirming life for the next gen. Grab it by the reins & don’t let go.The Javiers discussed how the film is also about those who try to erase art. We need to protect, promote,& consume it.Till the day the scythe takes us.
If you live in LA you have exactly 9 days left to see some great Rothko work as part of “The Expanding Field: MOCA’s Collection from the 1940s to 1970s” exhibit.
I’m not a huge fan of the gallery lighting tbh but was well worth it (also, MOCA admission is free). Rothkos are super sensitive so they usually aren’t put up permanently unless under ideal conditions (Rothko Room at Tate Modern). So it may be a couple of years until these go on display again.
I know with other digital tools it’s been obvious for years any human work could have been augmented but there’s something the scale & subtlety that is deeply unnerving.
I know there have been a few good pieces on this concept already. AI paranoia. Happens to me once a day be it a new book, article, or image. I was joking with a friend but really want to start the 2022 Society. We just consume anything created by that date or before…
