@wsneill@That80sG I think it’s worth going all the way to both Windsor and QC even if it wouldn’t be immediately as busy as the other legs. Induced demand is a real thing; it’s the same as highway infrastructure. The cost benefit analysis is different for infrastructure than a private venture.
@wsneill@That80sG@DefenseMinister Yes, those have 500 million people… combined! Which is why there are multiple rail systems to serve different locales. The 25 million in Ontario and Quebec are almost entirely concentrated around the ONE proposed line. Your comparison makes no sense.
@wsneill@That80sG@DefenseMinister Look at Japan, China, and EU. All have HSR in comparable areas and it spurred econ development. If we want to be a serious modern economy we need serious modern infrastructure.
@wsneill@That80sG@DefenseMinister The distances between cities in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor are ideal for HSR. Too short for flight and too long and slow for cars. Also, the population density on that stretch is the highest in the country. It will 100% increase travel and econ activity b/w cities.
@wsneill@That80sG@DefenseMinister HSR would be the first good infrastructure investment Canada has made in years. Every other country that has HSR uses it heavily, it makes a ton of sense here too. Our city gov’s incompetence doesn’t change that.
@SunGarrioch@OttawaCitizen Unless they get a needle-moving winger, they should not do this. Every time Spence played top-4 minutes he looked great. Play him with Sanderson, go Chabot-Zub, then Kleven-Matinpalo/Yak.
@theTonyFerrari No (@AdjustedHockey has him ranked at 187 all time currently and far below standard), but it would be the craziest high/low resumé ever.
@yolo_pinyato@Nntarno555 In terms of raw # of stars, there are still more 6’ + than under, even if the “hit rate” on stars is highest on smaller young draft picks
@yolo_pinyato@Nntarno555 I agree that big players are generally overvalued, but the much lower number of small players selected would also suggest that the only players of that size getting selected are ones exceptional enough to break through the NHL’s bias, no?
@MLarkinHockey@SensCentral@DailyFaceoff All of those other names have substantially more reason to be included, and none of those players has explicitly come out and said they want to stay in their market like Tkachuk.
@AdjustedHockey@DailyFaceoff Another great article Paul! Love how you’re always able to tell a great story while weaving in just enough statistics to provide helpful context. I had no idea Mackinnon was on that kind of career pace
@CHN_AdamWodon@TomGrothJr Totally agreed. Allowing 5 years starting at 19 allows more teams to be competitive while also on average leading to better academic outcomes. There’s literally 0 downsides for anyone except the schools who can recruit 18 y/o one and done top talent.
@TomGrothJr@CHN_AdamWodon The excesses you see in Basketball and Football due to egregious NIL money aren’t there in hockey. If they want uniformity, I think allowing 5 years after 19th birthday makes complete sense.
@TomGrothJr@CHN_AdamWodon College hockey consistently has high graduation rates, and I believe that’s at least in part to older freshmen being better prepared. That was the case for me. Small schools are also able to compete by recruiting late bloomers.
@TomGrothJr@CHN_AdamWodon Did you even read the piece? Hockey’s development pipeline is different than other sports. Unless you live in Minnesota, it’s not tied to high schools. Also, why should athletes be punished for taking a gap year or two when other students aren’t?
@ShackTS When Ullmark was struggling earlier this year, he was not tracking and not getting his feet set. That said, I think he’s actually been very good at those two things over the first two playoff games. I respect Valiquette’s analysis a lot, but I think he came on too harsh here.
@ShackTS I totally disagree with the idea that Ullmark isn’t a battler, but his initial criticism of Ullmark’s ability to beat pucks on his feet (and ability to track east-west) is not entirely unfounded. It’s definitely not his strong suit overall.
