Loath to generalize as I am, I should probably explain that in a previous lifetime of covering an urban police department in detail, I knew a plurality of officers who were honest and committed to police work that actually mattered. I also knew a second tier who did not give a fuck save for their overtime check. And I knew some meaningful number who were purposefully brutal, and some who proved themselves openly corrupt. It took all kinds, as real life often does.

But watching the Adams administration implode in New York these past weeks, I'm now ready to go with a crude, blanketing theory of basic civics: If someone serves in a major urban police department and achieves any rank higher than lieutenant -- and following this, they exhibit ambitions of high elective office -- we need to vote said officer into electoral oblivion.

Argue amongst yourselves. I just know the kind of cop who would see himself successfully making that transition, and, well, no.
