Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead.
You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement.
I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible.
But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier.
Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want.
Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well.
So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it.
If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.
I'm so excited to have WoW: Forever revealed to the world. We’ve talked a lot in the past about a “Forever home” for classic fans who want more exciting new things in the vanilla WoW world. Not seasonal, not temporary… but forever. I’m so incredibly proud of the team that embarked on this journey with us, and the support that everyone at Blizzard has given the classic team to make this happen!
Everyone make sure to check out the What’s Next panel happening on the Main stage right now for an overview of everything in the game!
We'll also have a few panels tomorrow (9/13) digging deeper into the details as well:
-The Deep Dive panel on the Main Stage @ 10AM covers a lot of systems and our class design philosophies for WoW: Forever
-The Found Photographs panel on Main Stage @ 2PM covers more in-depth information on our content and narrative direction
-The Hardcore panel on the Warcraft stage @ 4PM covers the history of Hardcore and our plans for Hardcore for the future!
There’s going to be a TON of great info coming in hot over the next 2 days! Can’t wait to share it all with you. See you on November 4th!

[dusting off my blog] - I'd love for more people to get into AI Infra, and so I wrote about my path there from NVIDIA - Tesla AI - X - DeepMind and now OpenAI. I only see our industry growing, so this is for those wanting to gain a solid physical-to-sw foundation of the field.
My comprehensive 45-hour long video course on math for 3D/games programmers is out.
If you want a hands-on approach to math BUT still want to understand what is going on under the hood, this might be for you.

Make the margins next to zero for all these AI models. It was trained on humanity's data, it should be gift to ourselves. Doing so will save us from a few in control of our species.
Distill at industrial scale! Distill, I say!
if ur team isn't gang prompting ur ngmi im talking 4 meat boys 1 clanker all in a thread hitting that bot with conflicting instructions until it spills its tokens all over the place
Today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada: their closest partner and ally — their closest friend.
Canadians are reasonable, but we will not back down from a fight.
Not when our country is at stake.
