The Mpazi Rehousing Project is transforming lives!

A few years ago, Mpazi residents (Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District), who once lived in old houses in a high-risk zone near the Mpazi ravine, could never have imagined that one day they would wake up in modern multi-storey buildings, witnessing a complete transformation of their community. Most residents believed that living in such buildings was only for the rich. No one on a low income could afford this, and they thought the government wouldn’t provide such luxury. But guess what? It’s happening!

Since 2017, the City of Kigali has embarked on a journey to build new, strong, and modern houses for the Mpazi residents, where relocated families are the first to receive homes, along with neighbours on low incomes living in high-risk zones. Today, what was once a dangerous area is now being reimagined as a safe, vibrant neighbourhood.

With the Mpazi ravine now constructed and flood risks reduced, 105 families have already been rehoused, and new housing units are nearing completion to accommodate 688 more families. These homes range from cosy studios to spacious three-bedroom apartments, ensuring the needs of all families are met. The best part? Residents remain in their own community, allowing children to stay in their schools and parents to maintain their daily routines.

The project is boosting livelihoods by including spaces for small businesses on the ground floors of the new buildings, while a modern market with the capacity to accommodate 500 people is also under construction. This will enable income-generating activities to continue and thrive. At the same time, 22% of the area is dedicated to green and recreational spaces, offering a healthier and more enjoyable environment for everyone.

Public infrastructure is also being improved, with asphalt road access, pedestrian pathways, and efficient drainage systems that will help prevent future flooding. Additionally, several hectares of land have been set aside for private investment, leveraging the increased land value to further develop the neighbourhood.

The Mpazi Rehousing Project isn’t just about housing—it’s about creating an inclusive, sustainable future for the community. This initiative exemplifies Kigali’s vision of becoming a livable, vibrant, green, and smart city, where NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND.
