And finally, as a lurker, it has been excruciating to do this. But I have now completed my 5% participation. Yay and goodbye. Best of luck everyone, stay healthy :)
Taking this class at the same time as being a substitute teacher has allowed me to take parts of it and analyze the impacts of social media on the students. The class has given me great insight that I am looking forward to using in regards to my use of social media in the class.
My favourite lesson was lesson 11. As a big Disney fan I enjoyed being forced to think about my love with a more critical lens. I am looking forward to using Disney to teach my children about critical thinking and to not always take what they are shown at face value.
He mentioned that everything said is very accurate of the older metal scene and how more modern metal scenes have shifted their rhetorics and values towards promoting freedom and liberty of expression and beliefs. (Part 2)
I am once again faced with the struggle that I wish the materials of this class were updated. My boyfriend is very knowledgeable in music history had already told me about many thing Vivek mentioned at the beginning of his lecture. (part 1)
Lesson 13 was so great! As someone who has listened to various forms of metal throughout her life it was definitely interesting to hear it analyzed from a scholar perspective.
I feel like people who go out and destroy things already have the desire to do this and the protests provide them with an excellent cover that could potentially protect them as they run away with a crowd and reduce their chance of getting caught.
Do you think social media can also have a negative impact on protest. For example, more people can now be aware of where they are taking place (easy for people with malicious intent to participate).
Do you feel like the use of social media to mobilize people at marches has taken away from their impact? For example the huge march for the environment. Did any real policy changes come from that?
Is anyone else waiting for a grade to be confirmed for Journal 4? I never noticed that was a thing and I am now anxiously checking the grade page every hour.
@ebeduc307 The only music I can listen to while studying is the lofi girl playlist on youtube. Everything else is too distracting. Hans Zimmer helps when I am writing essays though.
@SarahValentini3 I didn't. I am also very disappointed with how people acted. This is not the way to get the government to listen to us and hear our needs. If anything, peoples' actions risk making the situation worse.
I think a big takeaway message is to be aware of what media is presenting to our children and to consider when it is important to have conversations with them about certain topics so they do not internalize hateful ideologies.
I already had noticed a lot of things "wrong" with older Disney movies. However, I feel like the documentary is a little dated as many of the more diverse and less romantic movies have come out in the past 10-15 years.
Although I can accept the huge issues with older Disney films, I think they can be used to initiate conversations with children. Examples like the "savages" song in Pocahontas; use this an a way to explain to children how wars often start. With people viewing the other
as different and them needing to be eliminated. I can see how without conversation this type of representation can be dangerous. But I think it is possible to turn this around and learn to use it as a tool to help children develop critical thinking towards the media they consume.
