📣 Statement | RWCHR Calls for Immediate International Action for Azerbaijani Opposition Leader Ali Karimli Amid Alarming Deterioration of his Detention Conditions
The deteriorating and inhumane conditions of @AliKarimli 's detention have reached a critical point, posing a serious and growing threat to his health and life, compelling his domestic legal counsel to seek urgent interim measures under Rule 39 of the European Court of Human Rights.
While we are encouraged that the Court has responded to the application by requesting information from the Government of Azerbaijan, we remain deeply concerned by Mr. Karimli’s life-threatening circumstances.
Mr. Karimli’s family and counsel have reported dramatic weight loss and severe physical exhaustion. On August 6, he lost consciousness due to severe dehydration while being transported to a court hearing and then collapsed during the proceedings.
Azerbaijani authorities at the State Security Service Investigation Detention Facility have continued to deprive him of clean drinking water and adequate food, to expose him to extreme heat and humidity without ventilation, to subject him to prolonged sleep deprivation, to confine him in an unsanitary cell infested with pests, and to severely restrict his contact with the outside world.
The continued deterioration of his detention conditions and health underscores the urgent need for immediate international action.
We urge Canada and like-minded States to take all measures at their disposal to safeguard Mr. Karimli’s life and to ensure his immediate release, including by designating those responsible under relevant sanctions legislation.

The treatment of prominent Azerbaijani opposition leader Ali Karimli is unconscionable. Reports that he is being deprived of clean water, adequate food, sleep, and medical care raise grave concerns for his health and safety.
Azerbaijani authorities must end this abuse, ensure his safety, and release him immediately – along with all those unjustly imprisoned for peaceful political activity.
The detention conditions of Azerbaijani opposition leader and WLC member @AliKarimli are rapidly deteriorating, putting his health and safety at serious risk.
We call on democratic governments and international institutions to act urgently and demand his immediate release.

The arrest & prolonged pre-trial detention of Azerbaijani opposition leader Ali Karimli is a blatant crackdown on dissent by the Aliyev govt.
Trump & Rubio should demand Karimli's immediate & unconditional release & an end to Aliyev's assault on free speech, the free press, & political dissent.

#StopPoliceBrutalitym The government would not be so aggressive towards the people unless there were no serious concerns about the future of the regime.

The govt. does not hide its view of the people as an enemy. There is no other name for sending a police force, beating and arresting residents of a building in Baku on June 8 for throwing rubbish at violent police. This is hostility to the people.

The Azerbaijani government wants to completely eliminate its political rivals under the pretext of a pandemic. If the international forces do not stop authoritarianism in Azerbaijan in the near future, Azerbaijan will face a serious catastrophe.
