Dave Ramsey weighs in on parents secretly paying one child for caregiving while keeping the rest of the family in the dark.

Caller: “My parents are 87 and 88. They want me to care for them instead of moving into assisted living. They’re offering to pay me my current salary plus a $50,000 CD but they don’t want my siblings to know about the CD.”

Dave Ramsey: “You can do whatever you want, but I don’t make deals that depend on keeping secrets.”

Caller: “We’re worried it’ll create problems later.”

Dave: “It will come out. And when it does, your siblings are going to think you took advantage of your parents.”

His advice?

Tell everyone upfront:

“Mom and Dad have decided they want me to be their caregiver. I’m taking a pay cut to do it, and they’re compensating me with my wages plus a $50,000 CD. I’m not asking for anyone’s permission I’m simply making sure everyone knows exactly what’s happening.”

Family money doesn’t destroy relationships nearly as often as family secrets do. Transparency today can prevent years of resentment, suspicion, and conflict tomorrow.
