Earlier today, I paid a condolence visit to the Baba Ahmed family in Kaduna following the passing of our elder brother, an elder statesman, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN), Alhaji Nafiu Baba Ahmed. I conveyed my heartfelt condolences to the family and shared in their grief at the loss of a respected member of the family and a valued member of our community.
At this difficult time, I prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and grant the Baba Ahmed family the strength, patience and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen

KADUNA STATE GOVERNOR GRANTS WAIVER ON TITLE OF ABUBAKAR GUMI COLLEGE FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF UNIVERSITY AND SCHOOL OF NURSING SCIENCES
In a bold move aimed at advancing education in Kaduna State and preserving the legacy of the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi, a renowned educationist and philanthropist, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has graciously approved a waiver of all financial obligations associated with the title of Abubakar Gumi College, Tudun Wada, Kaduna.
The waiver is intended to pave the way for the establishment of the proposed Abubakar Gumi University and the Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi School of Nursing Sciences on the premises of the College.
The development followed a series of consultations between Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who has been at the forefront of efforts to actualise the establishment of the two institutions, and the family of the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi.
The history of educational development in Kaduna State cannot be complete without acknowledging the immense contribution of the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi, whose philanthropy gave rise to the renowned Abubakar Gumi College in Tudun Wada, Kaduna.
Located within a community largely inhabited by people of modest means, the school provided children of less privileged families, including many orphans, with access to quality education comparable to that offered by some of the best schools in Kaduna State during its most prosperous years.
The two sections of the school, the morning section, which provided Western education, and the afternoon section, which focused on Islamic education were both highly regarded and attracted students from within and beyond the community.
The school's outstanding contribution to education earned Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi recognition both within and outside Nigeria. At its peak, the institution also had a significant number of expatriate teachers serving in both its Western and Islamic education sections.
Following the demise of the philanthropist, several efforts were made to reposition and revive the institution, which occupies a vast expanse of land with considerable potential for further educational development and greater benefit to the society and Kaduna State.
These efforts eventually gave rise to the proposal for the establishment of a university and a school of nursing sciences on the premises.
The Kaduna State Government, recognising the importance of the initiative and its potential contribution to the educational development of the State, has therefore stepped in to facilitate its actualisation.
With the granting of the waiver, the proposed institutions are expected to receive a significant boost, with development expected to commence in earnest.
The initiative is expected to not only revive the historic educational legacy of Abubakar Gumi College and the late Alhaji Ahmadu Chanchangi, but also create new opportunities for quality higher education and professional training for young people in Kaduna State and beyond.

INDEPENDENCE: UBA SANI FREES 27 INMATES, CLEMENCY BENEFICIARIES EXCEED 500
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has granted clemency to 27 inmates in correctional facilities across the state to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, bringing the number of beneficiaries of his administration’s clemency interventions to more than 500.
The exercise covers the release of eligible inmates as well as the payment of fines and compensation for others, as part of the administration’s restorative justice initiative.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement in Kaduna, saying the administration has committed more than ₦300 million to the payment of fines and compensation for victims since Governor Sani assumed office in May 2023.
Maiyaki said the latest intervention reflects the Governor’s commitment to a justice system that balances accountability and public safety with rehabilitation, reconciliation and the possibility of a second chance for deserving individuals.
“As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, Governor Uba Sani’s intervention gives practical expression to the compassion and shared humanity upon which enduring communities are built."
“The significance of clemency extends beyond release from custody; it lies in restoring hope and opening a credible path towards responsible citizenship,” he said.
Providing further details, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, said the latest exercise continues the Governor’s practice of extending clemency on significant national occasions, including New Year, Democracy Day and Independence Day.
Kanyip explained that the prerogative of mercy is exercised through established processes, with due regard to accountability, rehabilitation and the responsibilities that accompany freedom.
He said the payment of fines and compensation gives the initiative an important restorative dimension by removing financial barriers that may keep deserving inmates in custody while also recognising the interests of victims.
According to the Attorney-General, the scale and continuity of the interventions demonstrate that clemency under the administration is not a one-off gesture but part of a broader approach to justice and social reintegration.
“Each beneficiary represents a life offered another opportunity, a family reunited and a community with a renewed stake in successful reintegration. This commitment reflects the belief that justice serves society best when it also makes renewal possible,” Kanyip said.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture further reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Uba Sani to protecting society and respecting victims’ interests while supporting deserving beneficiaries to return to their families and communities as responsible and productive citizens.
