A couple scaled the 1,454-foot-tall Empire State Building to spread a message about love (and seemingly get engaged). It’s unclear how they got up there, but police were able to get them down safely. Both people have been arrested.

That is the reality many Indigenous families say they have faced for years.

Across Native communities, families continue searching for answers about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls while fighting for visibility at the same time.

Many Indigenous activists believe these cases did not receive the urgency or national attention they deserved.

So communities began creating their own awareness movements.

Prayer walks.

Red dress displays.

Community searches.

Social media campaigns.

Vigils lit by candlelight.

Not because they wanted attention.

Because they wanted people to care.

Today, more Americans are finally hearing about MMIW than ever before.

And many are asking:

“Why wasn’t this talked about sooner?”

That question matters.

Because awareness can save lives.

Visibility can create pressure.

Public attention can help families feel less forgotten.

And for Native communities, being seen matters deeply after generations of invisibility.

Why awareness is growing:

• Indigenous activists never stopped speaking

• Social media amplified Native voices

• Families shared painful stories publicly

• More people are demanding justice

The conversation may be getting louder now.

But Native families have been carrying these stories the entire time.

Should missing Indigenous women receive more nationwide coverage?
