Meta just launched Facebook Verified, a free badge that requires you to record a video selfie so they can match your face to your existing profile photos.

This is being pitched as a way to fight AI-generated fakes and scams on Marketplace and Dating.

What they’re not telling you:

🟡Whether they store a biometric template
🟡If the data gets used for anything else (AI training, ads, etc.)
🟡What happens if you delete your account

Another NetChoice Victory for Free Speech & Families: Fifth Circuit Keeps A Texas Online Censorship Law Blocked

NEW ORLEANS—The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit today affirmed the injunction blocking the central censorship requirement of Texas's HB 18, the so-called SCOPE Act. The ruling keeps the government from dictating what lawful speech Texas families see online, and leaves that decision with parents, where it belongs.

"This is a win for every Texan who believes the government has no business deciding what they can read, watch, and say online," said @Paul_Taske, Director of the NetChoice Litigation Center. "HB 18 would have forced websites to censor broad, vaguely defined categories of lawful speech. The Fifth Circuit is right to keep it blocked. Parents, not the government, are best positioned to decide what is appropriate for their own families, and today's ruling protects that fundamental right."

Today's decision continues a clear national trend: courts have now blocked similar online censorship and age-gating laws in California, Arkansas, and Mississippi. An unconstitutional law protects no one, and HB 18 is no exception. Texas families are best served by real safety tools that respect the Constitution, like NetChoice’s Digital Safety Shield for America.

🚨”Kids Safety” tech bills getting kicked out another week for markup in Senate Commerce.

Likely to give Blackburn time to revise KOSA text to include App Store Accountability Act and AI.

If the bill passes out of committee, the next step is the senate floor. Should it pass the senate it would then need to pass the House.

Ofcom's use of its new powers under the Online Safety Act (2023) are not going as they had hoped.

One of their first salvos of enforcement notices was to American companies, attempting to levy astronomical fines for hosting the expression of others on their platforms, available to UK users.

They had hoped, by pursuing the most controversial sites, this would scare many others into conformity, and, payment of these extra-territorial fines. It hasn't worked.
