Sports Media Executive, Investor and Advisor Former CEO @tetonridge @TheAmericanTR Former CRO @BarstoolSports
HOST of At The Table Podcast by JaneWallStreet
Another Pod with a truly awesome woman in the business of sports. Please check out: At The Table: Deirdre Lester interviews Julie Souza of Amazon Web Services https://t.co/BOJs8DCK00 via @YouTube
Former @barstoolsports CEO, Erika Badan, walks through the origins of Work Like A Girl with @GanunLester:
"I had started Work Like a Girl as a T-shirt idea at Barstool. Everyone was calling Barstool misogynistic and they were calling me the Token CEO.
But what we turned Work Like a Girl into about a year ago was starting to be a professional community on @SlackHQ.
So we have thousands of women on this Slack, and they're talking about... It's water cooler, so as more and more women grow into management positions, it's kinda lonely. You don't have a peer group. You don't have a safe space where you can vent or ask a question.
And then as more and more women work from home, they're looking to be connected to other women for networking, for jobs, for resources, for advice, for perspective, to be in a book club, whatever it may be."
Mule Media, which combines Work Like a Girl and The Local Moms Network now reaches over 3.5 million women every month.
"The future of media is community" - Erika Badan
Erika Badan and @GanunLester reflect on their Barstool Sports days, during which @barstoolsports, "was arguably the most influential brand of an entire generation."
Erika mentions that it took ~7 years to get an automotive partner (@chevrolet), and was grateful to have had 3 brands to work with at the start @naturallight, @DraftKings, @DUDEwipes.
The whole Barstool family built this beast from the ground up in such an authentic way that audiences today are still loyal to Barstool itself (Stoolies), but also to the sub-communities they cultivated- @spittinchiclets, @PardonMyTake, @BussinWTB, @callherdaddy...
As Deirdre notes,
"Lots of other things that transpired during that time and after that time I believe will become case studies at business schools all around the country."
And @erika_ is leveraging this sub-community styled approach in her newest venture, Mule Media, that combines Work Like A Girl with The Local Moms Network.
By Women, For Women.
@erika_ was a great boss and partner at Barstool Sports. It was great to have her on the podcast and here about the future for Mule Media @WorkLikeAGirl and Local Moms Network.
A little Barstool reunion for you all!
@GanunLester talks with @erika_ about their time @barstoolsports, moms as trillion-dollar decision makers, building trust in a world of infinite content, and of course, Erika's new venture Mule Media, which she calls a "community company."
Enjoy!

Bravo @reredevaux I’m sure there is immense pressure to take Golden Tempo to Preakness but working with animal athletes requires prioritizing their health over everything.
New episode of At The Table with Head of @fuboTV Studios & @fuboSports Network, Pamela Duckworth (@DuckyNY), is out now!
From launching one of the first FAST sports networks in just three months (even though CEO @davidgandler wanted it done in 2!) to turning a late-night experiment with @bareknucklefc into a @fuboTV minority-investment, Pam has pioneered what modern streaming looks like.
Host, @GanunLester gets into:
- Why FAST gives networks freedom to experiment
- The surprising staying power of Pay-Per-View
- Building niche sports into scalable brands
It's a sharp conversation on having thick skin, strategically throwing stuff at a wall & seeing what sticks, and always moving quick.

Julie Souza (Global Head of Sports @awscloud) explains that @F1 cars were redesigned in 2022 to promote more overtakes, "the most exciting thing about Motorsport".
Prior to 2022, the cars emitted a super turbulent aerodynamic wake that made it really hard for cars to overtake.
As a result of the redesign, @F1 saw 30% more overtakes in the succeeding season.
Another incredible example of how AWS is leveraging data to help leagues evolve & improve.
Global Head of Sports @awscloud, Julie Souza, talks about the art of negotiation:
"You have to be really comfortable with silence!"
One word can undermine your entire position and kill a deal.
Who’s got a deal story that went perfectly or completely off the rails? Share ⬇️.
JaneWallStreet Executive Chair, Deirdre Lester (@GanunLester) kind of fell into the sports world.
However, Global Head of Sports @awscloud, Julie Souza's entry into sports was a choice she made after working at Amex post grad-school.
She knew she liked strategy, she loved identifying the white space for a business to grow, and she wanted more than just a job she liked; she wanted to be in an industry she was hyper-passionate about.
From Amex she went to a college sports TV startup that was eventually bought by CBS Sports.
She then moved on to Sports Illustrated and ended up running Business Development at ESPN, before finding her ultimate calling card in the world of sports data and AI at Amazon Web Services.
Her gut call early was on the 💰: the explosion of data in sports was going to change the whole landscape.
FAST Networks are seeing a surge in audience and sports is the thing that will catapult the revenue opportunity for them. @HowieLongShort.

.@GanunLester's first JaneWallStreet column is here!
It focuses on the inherent value in challenger leagues maintaining a direct connection to fans, particularly at a time when future media rights dollars for non-tier-one properties remain uncertain.
