1970年、ウルグアイ・モンテビデオに生まれたアレハンドロ・ガルシアの本業は庭師だ。仕事の合間、彼は定規やマーカー、ボールペン、鉛筆を手に、暦の裏など手近にある紙に絵を描く。美術教育は一切受けていない。
きっかけは、子どもの頃にUFOを目撃した経験だったという。以来、彼が描き続けているのは、重力から解き放たれ、いまにも宇宙の彼方へ飛び立とうとする浮遊都市と、それを出迎えるように舞う星々のバレエだ。作品には《光の33人の貴婦人》《火星で生きる》《ストーンヘンジの門での接続》といった題名が並ぶ。中には《あなたの庭で、上位の存在と接触する》という1枚もある——庭師という本業と、宇宙との交信という創作が、1枚の絵の中で重なり合う。
ガルシアは自分の作品を、いわゆる霊媒芸術に近いものだと語る。「私は宇宙からのメッセージを吸収するチャンネルにすぎない」。
2010年、彼の作品はヨーロッパで初めて紹介され、パリの複数のアートフェアに出展。2015年には、"理想の宮殿"で知られる郵便配達員フェルディナン・シュヴァルへのオマージュ展「Élévations」にも参加した。以来、アール・ブリュットの主要コレクションにも収蔵されている。
