- Early cancer researcher
- Published broadly on various topics
- Although his studies on spirochetes were limited, Borrelia bears his name.
- Differentiated the types of spiral bacteria
- With Nocard, first cultured mycoplasma
Meet Medical Pioneer: Otto Obermeier (1843-1873)
- 1st to describe spirochetes in the blood of patients with relapsing fever during a louse-borne outbreak in Berlin (1867-68)
-Contracted and died of cholera, while studying that disease.

Meet Medical Pioneer: Antonio Carini (1872-1950)
-Furthered the discovery of Pneumocystis through careful observation, willingness to challenge norms, and humility to seek consultation. Directed the Pasteur Institute in Sao Paulo. Described > 100 microorganisms.
Meet Medical Pioneer: Dr. John F. Enders.
- Nobel Prize for cultivating the poliovirus, and insisted junior colleagues were included.
- First to culture the measles virus and develop an effective vaccine.
- His method -> development of vaccines against polio, mumps, and rubella.

Meet Medical Pioneer: Alfred Franรงois Donnรฉ (1801-1878). He was first to identify Trichomonas vaginalis (1836), developed photomicroscopy (1840s), was the first to describe platelets (1842) and the elevated WBC count and arrested cellular maturation in leukemia (1844), and more.
