@lucksmith SF Embarcadero. Jetlagged Visitors from EDT see it before dawn, etching it into memory. From wikipedia "loathsome monstrosity", a "howling obscenity", "pestiferous eyesore". technological excrescences deposited by a giant concrete dog with square intestines
@betenoire1 Handle, 1920s roots in ham radio. CB evolved for folks w no interest in vacuum tube electronics. ham radio began w Morse code and its 19th century telegrapher jargon. A telegraph key=handle? The cadence of your Morse code could identify you. I was WB6VLB as a teen. 88.
@LCochella @phillips_lab @USC @DAnneNguyen @CeljaUebel @aliciakrogers @adernburg @TaiowaM @ketting_rene Wow!! Such great news Carolyn. It has been a joy to watch your science ramify in so many dimensions. Congratulations to your fantastic students, postdocs, and techs as well. Yes!
Re Jan6 txts from Don Jr et al, news analysts missing key point: at moment of txt, it was likely that mob would murder some members of Congress/staffs. As inciters of the riot, Don Jr et al envisioned their 2nd deg murder jail time after trial. Stopping riot = save themselves.
Recruiting for small RNA projects, electron transport chain and iron-sulfur cluster genetics (w Mootha lab), aging, bacterial/animal interaction, computational biology projects. Lab has launched many careers, listed on Ruvkun website.
Projects powered by large-scale screening for dozens of mutants followed by full genome sequencing to reveal entire pathways. This genetics pivots projects into unexpected mechanisms. Hypothesis generating. Two to three author papers, not hundred author Big Science papers.
Jobs for PhDs and techs. Ruvkun lab at Harvard/MGH. C. elegans small RNA, lifespan, bacterial defense pathways, analyzed with genetic screens and genome seq. Experience in genetics, any system, valuable. https://t.co/hoanp6A98U CV+ letters rec to [email protected]
@wyomingwormboy On the other hand, when I see that word in any paper, often repeatedly, it reveals that the author(s) have drunk the biotech venture capitalist Kool Aid, and that shunning is appropriate. Some fools even use it in seminars---imagine the word cloud at Flagship Ventures meetings
@HarmitMalik @ed_green_72 A possibility I had not considered. Peter is 70 years old, very curly hair, smiles a lot. But attributes of most L drivers. Curly smiley 70 year old Yellow Lamborghini driver? I am amused that Seattle Lamborghini narrows the suspects to a dozen.
@HarmitMalik @ed_green_72 My good buddy Peter who lived 3 doors away growing up in the Bay Area and now lives in Seattle let me drive his Silver Lamborghini on 405 a decade ago. I drove it very nervously at 35 mph. 20K Lamborghinis in the world..probably only 20 in Seattle...but his not yellow.
After the online vaccination booking shitshow in Massachusetts last week the actual large scale vaccination site in Worcester was super effective and well organized. MA government out of my doghouse. And abrazos to Moderna Pfizer and all vaccine designers and production crews
@mbeisen Zoological endorsement of worms: Blastp report for RNA dependent RNA polymerase query to any metazoan.
RdRp= second stage amplifier and engine of kickass RNAi. Notice that this list of animals is a who's who of tough little critters. Ask any adolescent about this list
@andy_utoronto My view:C. elegans RNAi is more on target than the single siRNA or a couple siRNA mammalian RNAi. In worm, a 1 kb dsRNA produces 1000 siRNAs in parallel so that the on target effects of 1000 siRNAs sum, off target average. Worse in mammals perhaps.
@SenguptaLab I use the term Cardinal Systems. E coli, yeast, flies, worm genetics are akin to lighthouses for navigation of the seas. Intellectual maps of universal genetic pathways and specializations of particular clades. Codification of knowledge. But not model train sets. Locomotives
@hitenmadhani Gotta comment that Gene Trefethen was my one of my father’s (Sam Ruvkun) bosses at Kaiser Engineering in Oakland from 1946 to 1970 approx. I remember hearing his name mentioned with great respect often.
https://t.co/m3RDm4Fgcy. A very detailed history of Kaiser Oakland. Full of personal histories that are detailed and riveting. By the fantastic oral history project of UC Berkeley Bancroft Library.
