Freedom, in America, has been successfully repackaged as a consumer product.

There's a reason the American antiwar movement of the 1960s and 70s was the most significant domestic political crisis the American empire faced in the twentieth century.

It was not just Americans feeling bad about a war.

It was Americans beginning to see the machine from the inside at the same moment the Vietnamese were dismantling it from the outside.

The Vietnamese resistance created the conditions for American soldiers to come home changed. Radicalized. Willing to testify. Willing to name names. Willing to describe, in public, in their own words, what had been done in their name with their bodies.

Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

These were not academics. Not intellectuals. Not comfortable critics.

These were the kids from the deindustrialized towns who had been handed the rifle and the story.

And they came back with something the story could not survive contact with.

Experience.

The Vietnamese resistance, by holding on, by refusing to be defeated on the timeline the empire required, gave those soldiers enough time to see.

Enough time to understand.

Enough time to come home and tell the truth.

Vietnam fought for Vietnam.

And in fighting long enough and hard enough, it gave some of the people sent to destroy it the chance to save themselves.

Colonel Jacques Baud: The current Israelis are, in fact, Europeans. They are not from the Middle East. They have never been from the Middle East historically. Never. The Israelis that are currently in Israel are pure Europeans. Pure.

They have a small number of Israelis who are Mizrahi, who belong to the Middle Eastern culture and might probably be able to understand the nuance and the subtlety of the diplomatic dialogue or discussion in the Middle East.

But those Mizrahi, those Israelis who are the real Jews from Palestine, if I can put it that way, these are not in power. They have even been kept away from power. The power belongs to those Eastern European Jews, which is the Ashkenazi, who have historically had no relationship with the Middle East.

And these people have all the features of the Europeans. They have the same arrogance. They have the same approach to problems. They probably have some positive aspects; probably they are more efficient, or things like that, but at the same time they are not able to understand complex triangular relationships.

It’s always bipolar. It cannot be more than this. That’s very much who we are as Europeans, and I’ve witnessed that so many times that when you start to have a discussion, a dialogue in the Middle East, Europeans are lost, essentially because, for them, again, we come from a culture where everything is either black or white.

For us, the friend of my friend is my friend, but put an enemy in this triangle, and you start to have a problem. For a European, you cannot put the word “enemy” in this triangle. But in the Middle East, you can put the word “enemy” in this triangle, and it still works.

$866 million. That’s the real cost of the BOM’s tech overhaul. For years nobody could get the figure out of them. “Cabinet-in-confidence.”

The only reason you heard about the $96.5 million website is because it was such a dud the new boss had to front up and admit it. The old site did the job. Farmers checked it every morning. So did truckies, fishos, your nan. Didn’t matter.

Accenture’s original contract was $31 million. It got extended nine times. No new tender. It ended up at $78 million.

And why were consultants running the whole show? Because Canberra put a cap on public service numbers, then had to pay consultants to do the work anyway. The cap came in under the Coalition. The blowout happened under Labor. Nobody’s hands are clean here.

So the firm delivers a dud. What happens next? More work. A $17 million Defence deal. A $30 million AEC contract. And $15.7 million to build another government website. Meanwhile CSIRO is sacking hundreds of scientists because apparently there’s no money.

The Minister told Senate estimates this shows we need “greater oversight of consultants.” Then his own agencies went and signed the new deals anyway.

Stuff up at your job and see if you get $170 million worth of new work out of it.

None of it is illegal. That’s the problem.

Accenture paid him $35 million. Now he sits at Labor’s Cabinet table.

And it’s all legal.

$35 million. That’s what Accenture reportedly paid Andrew Charlton for his consulting firm in 2020. He stayed on as one of their managing directors.

Two years later, Labor parachuted him into Parramatta. Today he’s Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Minister for the Digital Economy, sitting at the centre of the same government handing Accenture roughly $300 million a year in contracts.

The same Accenture behind the BOM website disaster. $31 million contract, extended nine times, finished at $78 million. Same Accenture that got rewarded after the stuff-up with new deals from Defence, the AEC, and yes, another government website.

Now, let’s be fair. I checked Charlton’s register of interests myself. No Accenture shares. No Accenture directorship. He exited clean.

But here’s what I found instead. His entire $40 million fortune sits in three boxes on the public record: a family trust, a private investment company, and a unit trust. Each one described with a single word, “Investment.”

That’s it. That’s all the law requires him to tell you.

So ask the obvious question: can anyone check whether any minister still has money riding on companies winning contracts from their own government? No. The register names the boxes. It can’t open them.

And the bloke across the chamber? Angus Taylor. Seven years at McKinsey. Both sides of the dispatch box, one consulting industry, and a disclosure system built not to look too hard.

He’s followed every rule. That’s exactly the problem.
