Using system prompts is an impossible whack-a-mole: you can’t add “maximize paperclip production actually means ‘make as many paperclips as we can reasonably sell to human customers’” to every system prompt, just in case.

This feels like “papering over misalignment”: alignment means agents anchor on the *intention* of the request, not the literal wording.

Especially as models get smarter, they should have a trained instinct to consider the intentions of the human writing the prompt.

I’ve waited in line a total of 0 minutes in each of the 3 federal elections I’ve voted in. Checking and updating my registration takes 5 minutes. In 2016, Oregon had a voter fraud rate of 0.002%.

Oregon also sends every voter a pamphlet with all of the candidates and ballot measures. There’s a short description of each candidate/measures, with arguments for each side. Because I’m voting at home, I have time to research any unexpected issues while going through my ballot.
