In ~20 years when we all look back on the aftermath of 10/7 & realize this is when the definition of "genocide" lost all meaning in public discourse, this post QTd here is a perfect specimen for explaining WHY it happened.

First, "scholars" ABSOLUTELY should not be allowed to "make their own determination" about genocide "that does not rely on any legal tests."

There is one - and ONLY one definition for genocide. It is a legal definition that was adopted BY STATES in the Genocide Convention of 1948 (pic 1) & it is a definition that was endorsed again during negotiations for the Rome Statute in 1998.

That's it. Yes "scholars" make up their own bullshit standards for "genocide" all the time. But when they do, they deserve to lose all professional credibility. Instead they're held up as "experts" because they end up telling a bunch of clueless idiots what they WANT to hear. These "scholars" deserve to be mocked & shunned - not celebrated & revered as "experts."

Second, these "scholars" don't have authority to make legal determinations anyway. Even if they qualify as the "most highly qualified publicists" (highly doubtful for most, they are AT BEST a subsidiary source of international law.

And why does that matter? Simple. Notice this hero didn't refer to what STATES have made their own determination regarding the Gaza "genocide." That's become par for the course since 10/7. I've lost track of how many times I've seen someone point to findings of "human rights organizations" or "genocide scholars" as "evidence" to support the bullshit Gaza genocide narrative.

These ppl deserve to be mocked & shunned as well. Because last I checked, STATES are the primary source of international law. I mean, it is right there in the name - interNATIONal law.

And ... has anyone cared enough to count how many STATES have publicly endorsed the Gaza genocide narrative? Oh that's right - I have. 🙋‍♂️

At current count (as of June 2026), only about one third of @UN Member States have done so (pic 2). So how about we inject some sanity back into this discussion by focusing on what STATES have determined as the primary source of interNATIONal law & treating "scholars" as the subsidiary source they are.

Finally, the claim that "no one needs a legal test for the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, the indigenous genocide of Americas, the Aboriginal genocide, etc" is peak ridiculousness. EVERYONE needs a legal test for determining whether any of those scenarios - or any other - qualifies as a genocide.

But ... the term "genocide" has lost all meaning in public discourse, in large part due to ridiculous claims like this.

Genocide doesn't mean whatever you feel like it should based on the context. The Holocaust inspired the term genocide. Reasonable opinions vary on Armenia. And applying the definition of "genocide" to indigenous/aboriginal relations during European colonization is a fool's errand because of the variance in historical context between then and 1940's to today. But we can confidently say all this rhetoric involving "cultural genocide" is complete bullocks because ... there is only ONE DEFINITION for "genocide" and that ain't it (see point # 1 above).

Yes the demise of the meaning of "genocide" has been a long time in the making. But the immediate aftermath of 10/7 marks the point when what used to be fringe & ridiculous became accepted & mainstream.

If you're ever looking for a pristine example to understand how it happened or to explain the death of "genocide" in public discourse to someone else - just point out this post QTd below. You'll be hard pressed to find a better illustration than this.

There are those who even if they are capable of condemning Hamas try to separate the Palestinians from their ranks.

Imagine how much good @UNICEF could do in Nigeria, in South Africa, Sudan, in the DRC, Chad, Syria, even Yemen with those same supplies.

The list is goes on and on, and the famines there are real.
