In close collaboration with the Finnish Red Cross @PunainenRisti, we recently supported the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS/#BishaCas) to procure and dispatch essential Outpatient Department (OPD) medical supplies in response to health challenges in the region.

The Somalia Red Crescent Society (#SRCS) has embarked on developing a comprehensive safety and security policy framework to address the increasingly complex operational environment facing its staff and volunteers during emergency responses.

To spearhead this critical initiative, SRCS management has organized a three-day workshop scheduled for September 22-24, 2025, in Nairobi. The workshop brought together key stakeholders including SRCS leadership and senior management members, along with representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (#ICRC), International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (#IFRC), and Finnish Red Cross.

The primary focus of this workshop is to establish guidelines designed to minimize personnel exposure to hazardous situations. This strategic gathering represents an important step forward in SRCS's commitment to protecting its workforce while maintaining effective humanitarian operations.

The consultative workshop on the development of the Somali Red Crescent Communication Strategy wrapped up successfully today.

This comes after a recent validation workshop in Mogadishu on SAF Context and Risk Assessment, which was part of the Communication Strategy Review Exercise.

The management and a group of representatives from various SRCS branches worked on the report, which outlined several significant challenges the country is dealing with, challenges that the National Society deemed important to address.

During the closing ceremony, Mr. Mohamed Abdi Warsame, the Executive Director of the SRCS Mogadishu Coordination Office, and Mr. Abdulkadir Ibrahim "Afi", the SRCS Director of Organizational Development and Communication, presented a gift to Ms. Gorata Seretsa from the Finnish Red Cross. This token of appreciation was given in recognition of her co-facilitation of the workshop.

We extend our gratitude to the ICRC, IFRC, and Finnish Red Cross for their support in this crucial exercise.

The Physical Rehabilitation Centre of the Somali Red Crescent in #Mogadishu, supported by the @ICRC_Africa produces 20/30 prosthetics/orthotics per month and welcomes 35 physiotherapy patients/day, helping people with disability regain their mobility, dignity and smile. :-)

A three-day validation workshop has opened in Mogadishu as part of the Safer Access Framework (SAF) plan. This workshop is a follow-up to context and risk assessment workshops conducted across 12 branches of the Somali Red Crescent Society.

The primary goal of this Validation Workshop is to review and authenticate the assessment report developed by the branches, identify any gaps, and compile a comprehensive report on SRCS's Context and Risk Assessment.

The Safer Access Framework (SAF) is an eight-element guide containing actions and measures that, when implemented by a National Society based on context-specific priorities, enhance its acceptance, security, and access to people and communities in need. Each element of the SAF is interlinked and interdependent, much like a chain.

From providing life-saving vaccines, nutrition care, and maternal/child healthcare, the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) mobile clinics are bringing hope to displaced communities in Wadajir Internally displaced persons (IDP) camp, Boosaso, Bari region.

The SRCS mobile clinic serves more than 7,800 people (1,300 households) in the camp.

SRCS runs two mobile clinics in the Bari region under the integrated community resilience and development programme.

A workshop on Context and Risk Assessment (CRA)attended by 12 Branch Coordinators and Senior Management Team was opened at the SRCS Coordination Office in Mogadishu.

The workshop facilitated by members of the SRCS Senior Management Team, namely Mohamed Abdi Warsame, Abdulkadir Ibrahim “Afi” and Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed, is planned to continue from 6th to 8th October 2024. It is aimed at updating the Safer Access Framework tools and enable SRCS Branch Coordinators to conduct CRA workshops in their respective branches.

Somali Red Crescent conducts the Context and Risk Assessment once every two years and is used as a management tool for the branches. SRCS branches gather adequate, accurate and reliable information in order to maintain and increase the National Society acceptance, security and access.

Today, I spoke at a webinar launching a research study on National Society Development in fragile, complex, and protracted conflict and violence-affected contexts. The study was conducted in six National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies: Afghanistan, Honduras, Mali, Somalia, Ukraine, and Yemen.

In my presentation, I focused on the country context, SRCS operations, and how it manages to operate in a highly complex and sensitive environment.

SRCS has strengthened its proximity and accountability to communities by initiating National Society Development (NSD) investments in sub-branch development to address specific long-term needs in selected areas. These investments have enabled SRCS to deliver services in a principled way.
Investments in leadership and governance at the branch and sub-branch levels have strengthened SRCS’s services at the community level while ensuring adherence to its fundamental principles. SRCS’s access and acceptance among communities, authorities, and non-state actors are based on its permanent local presence and services in areas no other organization can reach.

Over the past decade, NSD investments have resulted in a set of neutral, impartial, and independent core community-based services.
