I kind of struggle with Talisker, the 'house style' feels a bit coarse and dry. This GoT's edition sounded like it could be a good foot-in-the-door for me; helping me to appreciate what they have to offer at large.

The Caribbean Cask has been finished in rum casks to "enhance the ... vanilla"? Did we need more vanilla whisky?
Another old bottle that's been sat in limbo with me for too long. Best get it finished and find something less vanilla to take it's place 😉

Another tour I've been dragging my heels on editing together. @DewarsAberfeldy , the home of Dewar's is known for its friendly & honeyed style. I typically look for a more aggressive character so had to give their exceptional & single casks a try 😁

The @Glengoyne 12 has always been a budget-friendly favourite for me, one of the expressions that helped solidify my fondness for the distillery. It deserves a little bit of a spotlight every once in a while in my opinion 👍

6th best selling single malt Scotch in the world, Balvenie know their value and don't under-price themselves. This 12 year old is the entry point to their core range but it will still set you back ~£40, is it worth it?

Enjoying this one, initially rich fruits & sweetness but layers of interest behind that. An authentic linseed oil, minerality, cask char & hint of smoke add that 'funkiness' as a point of distinction 🥃👍

Last of these samples to enjoy, on the nose:
Nectarines & treacle, sugared almonds, cask char, oily & syrupy, whetstone, linseed oil, hint of tree sap, milky mocha, cinnamon & nutmeg.

Palate: oily & thick mouthfeel, something baking (pastry?), barley, cinnamon, linseed oil & that cask char again. A touch green & waxy.

Finish: cracked pepper, 'whetstone' funk, minerality (slight salinity?), tiniest whiff of a smouldering fire, lingering sultanas.
