What happens when Cuban regime networks, Palestinian militant organizations, and U.S.-based activist groups intersect?
My latest @WashTimes piece examines the PFLP's presence in Cuba, the role of Havana in regional influence operations, and links to a California nonprofit.

Jonathan David Muir Burgos spent his 17th birthday in a Cuban prison.
He was detained by the Castro regime in early March because of his Christian faith and for participating in pro-democracy protests.
Since his detention, regime operatives have denied him medical care for a skin condition that requires ongoing treatment.
The world should be outraged that the regime continues to get away with this cruelty and blatant disregard for basic human rights and human dignity.
The Castro regime is corrupt, murderous, and evil. For nearly 70 years, it has oppressed the Cuban people and deprived them of their most fundamental freedoms.
I demand Jonathan’s immediate and unconditional release!
No minor should ever endure something like this.
“Many so-called U.N. independent human rights experts are engaged in very extreme anti-American, anti-Western, anti-capitalist, far-left, and certainly anti-Israel agendas. That's the dominant ethos.”

1.) @StateDept sanctions the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) for being a front for Cuban intelligence. ICAP has played a central role in bringing American activists to Havana, including Hasan Piker this March: https://t.co/PiIa2JbcXt
🧵🔥 If you’ve been reading our reporting at @FoxNews Digital, you will understand the significance of this news from @SecRubio that the State Department is sanctioning the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, known by its Spanish acronym, ICAP, and others.
Here is what you need to know:
🇨🇺 ICAP is run by a former Cuban intelligence officer.
🇨🇺🇺🇸 ICAP worked with pro-Marxist U.S. nonprofits -- Progressive International, People's Forum and CodePink -- to bring Marxist influencer Hasan Piker to Cuba in March for the convoy trip that is now under federal scrutiny.
🇨🇺 🇺🇸 ICAP also works with other Marxist US groups, including ANSWER Coalition, BreakThrough News, Party for Socialism and Liberation
🇨🇺 🇺🇸🇨🇳 CodePink, People's Forum, BreakThrough News, Tricontinental, ANSWER Coalition and Party for Socialism and Liberation are part of a wide pro-Marxist network that is funded and supported by China-based Marxist tycoon Neville Roy Singham, who is married to Jodie Evans, CodePink's co-founder
🔴 Did you notice a common adjective? Marxist.
🔴 The communist and Marxist influence on U.S. organizations -- pro-China and pro-Cuba -- on America's streets has stoked chaos and discord in the United States
🔴 Rubio is saying: no more.
🔴 This action won't curb Marxist influence, which is now homegrown, but it sends a very strong signal that Rubio has his eyes very much on malign Marxist influence.
🔴 Singham supports the Chinese Communist Party and the Communist Party of Cuba.
🇺🇸 Lawmakers and feds are investigating Singham’s influence in building this nexus between US orgs and communist orgs like the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples.
Read my 🧵 to catch up!
2.) ICAP also played a central role in bringing the American political activist, Calla Walsh, to #Cuba on multiple trips beginning in 2022. I documented Walsh’s radicalization, and Cuba’s role in it, for @TheFP in March: https://t.co/4i9H7piFIv
🚨 Secretary of State Marco Rubio just announced sanctions against the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, better known as ICAP, along with associated Cuban entities like Amistur.
For those who haven’t been following this closely, ICAP and Amistur were behind the travel logistics for Progressive International’s “Nuestra América” convoy, the same Cuba trip joined by Hasan Piker and Medea Benjamin.
This is a clip I captured while attending the Cuba Normalization Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center. In it, ICAP’s Leima Martínez Freire says other Cuba delegations were organizing through Amistur and that Progressive International would be bringing its delegates to ICAP headquarters on March 21.
1. Ministerio de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Cuba (MINFAR) 2. Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (ICAP) 3. Amistur Cuba S. A. 4. Comités de Defensa de la Revolución (CDR) 5. Minera La Victoria S. A.
A while ago, I made the case for sanctioning ICAP and its travel agency, Amistur. Today, both entities were finally sanctioned.
It is encouraging to see this administration break with the failures of past administrations and move from rhetoric to concrete action against the Cuban regime and the networks that sustain it.
My latest piece in the @WashTimes exposes how the Cuban regime is using @ICAP_cuba to advance the agenda of Al-Tajammu — a pro-Hezbollah, pro-Iran terror network. As such, the U.S. should sanction it. @SecRubio can help correct this blind spot. https://t.co/lMrm9GhCmQ
“Reports recently emerged that the Justice and Treasury departments are investigating U.S. non-profits and activist groups for allegedly coordinating with Cuba as part of a foreign influence campaign,” @GeletMartinez and Jeffrey Scott Shapiro explain.

“For years, the network linking Cuban intelligence-linked organizations, Islamist extremist groups, and Western activist movements has operated with little scrutiny,” @GeletMartinez and Jeffrey Scott Shapiro write.

Broadening U.S. sanctions to go after the Cuban regime’s business partners is essential to increasing pressure on Havana and bringing long overdue political and economic change. We outline 6 specific steps to escalate that pressure @FDD@maxmeizlish https://t.co/crYhc0Z3bd
