No Family Left Behind: How Eritrea Continues to Honor Its Martyrs
ERITREA ― For many countries emerging from war, honoring fallen soldiers often ends with monuments, annual ceremonies, and symbolic tributes.
Sustained financial support for their families is far less common, particularly in developing nations facing severe economic hardship. Eritrea has pursued a different approach.
Although the country has faced decades-long border conflicts, economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and limited economic resources, the Eritrean government has maintained a long-standing national welfare program dedicated to the families of the country's martyrs.
The policy reflects the principle that those who sacrificed their lives for the nation's independence and sovereignty should not leave their families to shoulder the burden alone.
The first assistance program was launched in 1995, just two years after achieving independence. The government provided a one-time grant of 10,000 Nakfa to families of each of the 65,000 martyrs who lost their lives during the country's 30-year struggle for independence.
Following the 1998-2000 border war with Ethiopia, which claimed the lives of more than 20,000 additional Eritrean martyrs, the government expanded the program. Beginning in January 2004, it introduced a monthly support payment of 500 Nakfa per martyr to eligible families.
Since then, more than 6.2 billion Nakfa has been disbursed, a substantial commitment for a small nation that has continued to face significant economic and geopolitical challenges.
The program is reinforced by Eritreans living abroad, who have embraced the responsibility of supporting the families of martyrs.
Every national in the Diaspora has taken the initiative to contribute US $720 over two years, while others have adopted individual martyr families to support them permanently.
This partnership between the state and its citizens reflects a shared belief that the debt owed to the nation's martyrs extends beyond remembrance and must be expressed through tangible support.
For Eritrea, caring for the families of those who gave their lives is not simply a social welfare policy. It is a national commitment rooted in gratitude, solidarity, and the conviction that the sacrifices made for the country's freedom should never be forgotten.
On June 20th each year, Eritreans at home and throughout the diaspora pay tribute to their Martyrs through candlelight vigils and solemn acts of remembrance. #MartyrsDay

Prayers (ሰላትን ዱዓን) held at Asmara's Grand Mosque in mid-afternoon hours today in commemoration of Martyrs Day.
Presiding over the event, Eritrea's Mufti, Sheikh Salim Ibrahim Al-Mukhtar, stated that "June 20th is a day of pride and honour in which we pay tribute to our heroic Martyrs who ushered in the light of independence and sovereignty through their precious sacrifices". In the event, "it is the obligation of every citizen to support families of our Martyrs", Sheikh Salim further noted.

Eritrea’s Martyrs Day Commemorated with Patriotic Zeal
Eritrea’s Martyrs Day was commemorated with patriotic zeal by nationals inside the country and abroad.
At the commemorative event held at Asmara Martyrs Cemetery, President Isaias Afwerki laid a wreath in tribute to the heroic martyrs. The commemorative event commenced with a public procession from Shida Square to the Martyrs Cemetery, accompanied by a marching band.
The ceremony was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, Army Commanders, members of the diplomatic community, and thousands of Asmara residents.
The official ceremony, which was broadcast live on Eri-TV and Radio Dimtsi Hafash, featured cultural and artistic performances highlighting the deep meaning of the day and the invaluable sacrifices made by the gallant freedom fighters for Eritrea’s independence and national sovereignty.
Martyrs Day was also marked with patriotic zeal on 19 June by Eritrean nationals inside the country and abroad with a candlelight vigil.
The commemorative event in Asmara was conducted with a candlelight vigil and walkathon from Martyrs Avenue to Bahti Meskerem Square, accompanied by a marching band. The event drew thousands of Asmara residents.
Mr. Tekie Qeleta, Director General of Administration and Finance of the Central Region, noting that Eritrea’s martyrs are the source of national pride who ensured the country’s independence and national sovereignty, underlined that Martyrs Day, 20 June, is a reminder for every national to support families of martyrs and live up to their expectations by redoubling efforts in the nation-building process.
The ceremony at Bahti Meskerem Square was broadcast live on Eritrean Television and Radio Dimtsi Hafash.
Martyrs Day, 20 June, was also enthusiastically commemorated nationwide with various events in remembrance of Eritrea’s heroes and heroines who paid the ultimate price for independence and national sovereignty.
At exactly 1:00 p.m. today, a minute of silence was observed across the country in memory of the martyrs.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare has stated that GOE has disbursed, through monthly installments, over 6.2 billion Nacfa in tribute to, and, for the support of the families of Eritrea's Martyrs in the past twenty years (2004-2025).

እነማዕብሎ ወይ እነልምዖ ማይ ኩሉ፡ ጽ���ይ ማለት ኣይኮነን። ማይ ተረኽበ ኢልካ ዝሕለፍን ብቐጥታ ንህዝቢ ዝቕረብን ኣይኮነን። ኣብ ሃገርና ዝተፈላለዩ ዓይነታት ኣኻውሕ ኣለዉ። ንህዝቢ ማይ ከተቕርብ ከኣ፡ ኣበይ ብዘየገድስ ምንጪ ማይ ከተረጋግጽ ኣለካ። ነዚ ንም���ግጋጽ፡ ብዙሕ መጽናዕቲ’ዩ ዝሓልፍ። ምኽንያቱ ብደረጃ ኣህጉራዊ ትካል ጥዕና ቀመማዊ ትሕዝቶኡን ህይወታዊ ትሕዝቶኡንከ እንታይ ክኸውን ኣለዎ፧ ኣብ ኣገልግሎት ቅድሚ ምውዓሉ መጀመርታ ዓይነቱ ክረጋገጽ ስለዘለዎ፡ ትካልና ካብዚ ተበጊሱ፡ ዘውጽኦም መለክዒታትን ደረጃታትን ኣለዉዎ። ስለዚ ንዕኡን ምስኡን ዝመጣጠን ድዩ ብልክዕ ንምፍላጥ፡ ቀመማውን ህይወታውን ትሕዝቶኡ ንምፍላጥ መጽናዕቲ ነካዪድ።
ካብዚ ብምብጋስ ዝተረኽበ ማይ ይስተ ማለት ስለ ዘይኮነን ነዚ ከየረጋገጽና ማይ ንዝስተ ክዕደል ስለ ዘይብሉን ክሳብ ሕጂ ዳርጋ ኣብ ኩለን ዝዀዓትናየን ዒላታት ከባቢ 12300 ቅምሶታት ናይ ላባላቶሪ ብምውሳድ መርመራ ቀመማውን ህይወታ���ን ኣካዪድናሎም ኣለና። ገለ እውን ብብዙሕ ወጻኢታት ተዃዒቶም ግን ብቕዓቶም ቅቡል ስለ ዘይኮነ፡ እንደገና ዓጺና ወይ ደፊንና እንገድፎም ዒላታት ኣለዉ። ነዚ ንመከታተሊ ዝሕግዛና 170 ዝኾና ነቚጣታት ኣለዋና። ዓይነት ናይ ትሕተ ባይታኣዊ ማይና፡ ይጐድልዶ ወይስ ተዓቂቡ ኣሎ፧ ንምፍላጥ መከታተሊ ዒላታት እውን ኣለዋና። እዚ ኩሉ ክጠቕሶ ዝጸናሕኩ፡ ብዘይ መጽናዕቲ ክብጻሕ ዘይክእል እዩ። ስለዚ ኣብ ክፍልና ንዳህሳስን ሓበሬታን ጸጋ ማይ እትከታተል ጨንፈር ኣላትና። ዲጋታት፡ ወይ ዝተፈላለዩ ዓይነት ስርሓት ኣብ ልዕሊ መሬት ከነካይድ ምስ እንደሊ፡ መጽናዕቲ ከነካይድ ግ ድነት እዩ።
ወቕቲ ዝናብ ሃገርና ይፈላለ’ዩ። ዝሰፈሐ ክፋሉ ግን፡ ኣብ ክረምቲ እዩ። እዚ ክብል እንከለኹ፡ ኣብ ምብራቓዊ ኣጻድፍ ፍልይ ዝበለ ወቕቲ ኣለዎ። ዝኾነ ኾይኑ፡ ድሕሪ ዝናብ ወይ’ውን ኣብ ወቕቲ ዝናብ፡ ውሒዙ ዝኸደና ብዝሒ ማይ ክንፈልጥ፡ ዓቐኑ ክንምዝግብ ግድነት ይኸውን። ንዝኾነ ይኹን ልምዓታዊ ስራሕ ኣብኡ ዝተመርኰሰ ስለ ዝኾነ ድማ፡ ኣቐዲሙ ብመጽና���ቲ ይሕለፍ እዩ። ከም ውጽኢት ናይ’ቲ እንገብሮ መጽናዕቲ፡ ልክዕ’ዩ ዓቕሙ ክብን ለጠቕን ክህልዎ ይኽእል ይኸውን። ዝኾነ ኾይኑ ኣብ ሃገርና ክንደይ ዝኣክል ጽፍሓዊ ማይ ከም ዘለና ግን ዛጊት ክንፈልጥ ክኢልና ኣለና። ንትሕተ ባይትኣዊ ማይ ክንደይ ካብኡ የህብትም ኣሎ’ውን፡ ምሉኡ ብምሉእ መሊኽናዮ ክንብል’ኳ እንተ ዘይከኣልና፡ ግምታት ግን ኣጥሪና ኣለና። ���ሕሪ ዝናብ ውሕጅ መሬትና ክሳብ ክንደይ ተባሕጒጉን ካብቲ ዝነበሮ ቦታ ርሒቑ ይጐዓዝን ዶብ ሰጊሩ’ውን፡ ክሳብ ክንደይ ይኸይድ ኣሎ ንምፍላጥ’ውን ምክትታል ንገብር ኢና። ነዚ ዝኸውን፡ ናይ ሓመድ ላባራቶሪ ኣሎና። ኩሉ ግዜ ኸኣ፡ ካብቶም ወሓይዝ ቅምሶ ብምውሳድ፡ ኣብ ላባላቶሪ ኣምጺእና ምርምራዊ ስራሕ ናይ ሓመድ ስለ እነካይድ ድማ፡ ክንደይ ሚእታዊት ካብኡ ሓመድ’ዩ ንምፍላጥ ይሕግዘና። እዚ ኣብ 1997 እዩ ተመስሪቱ። ክሳብ እዚ እዋን’ዚ ኸኣ፡ ኣብቶም ቀንዲን ዝያዳ ክሕለፉ ዘይብሎምን ኢልና እንሓስቦም ነቚጣታት ቅምሶታት ንእክብ ኢና።
ካብ ርኽበት ናይቲ ዝካየድ መጽናዕቲ፡ ፍግረ መሬት ዳርጋ ኣብ ሰለስተ መቒልና ኢና ክንርእዮ ን���ትን። ኣብዚ ዓመታዊ እቲ ዝተሓተ እንብሎ፡ ሓደ ሽሕ ቶን ካብ ሓደ ት.ኪ.ሜ፣ ማእከላይ፡ 3380 ቶን ካብ ሓደ ት.ኪ.ሜ፡ ኣሰካፊ እንብሎ ኸኣ ክሳብ 7 ሽሕ ቶን ሓመድ ካብ ሓደ ት.ኪ.ሜ፡ ተባሕጒጉ ይኸደና ምህላዉ ክንፈልጥ ክኢልና ኣለና። እዚ ንዓና ኣዝዩ ኣሰካፊ’ዩ። ሕብረተሰብና ብሓፈሻ፡ ሓረስታይና ድማ ብፍላይ፡ ክግደሰሉ ዝግብኦ ኣርእስቲ’ዩ። ምኽንያቱ እዚ ሓመድ’ዚ፡ ፍርያምነቱ ኣብ ሕርሻ ጥራ�� ዘይኮነ፡ ሃገርና ብትሕዝቶ ማዕድን’ውን፡ ደሓን ሃብቲ ኣለወን ተባሂለን ካብ ዝጥቀሳ ሃገራት ከም ምዃና መጠን፡ ፍግረ መሬት ዝጠንቁ ክብሪ ዘለዎም ማዕድናትና ተባሕጒጎም ይኸዱ ክህልዉ ስለ ዝኽእሉ፡ ጥንቃቐ ዝሓትት ጒዳይ’ዩ። መንግስቲ ካብዚ ተበገጊሱ ድማ’ዩ፡ ንናይ ምዕቃብ ሓመድን ማይን ብደረጃ ሃገር ብሰፊሑ ክስርሓሉ ዝለዓለ ኣቓልቦ ዝገብረሉ።
ክፍልኹም፡ ንትሕተ ባይትኣዊ ማይን ጂኦ-ፊዚክስን ኣመልኪቱ ዘካይዶ ዝጥፈት እንታይ ይመስል፧
ኣቐዲመ ጠቒሰ ነይረ። ኩሉ ልምዓታዊ ስርሓት፡ ኣብ ማይ ምርኩስ ዝገበረ’ዩ። ስለዝኾነ፡ ስነ-ፍልጠት ስነ-ፍልጠት ስለዝኾነ፡ ዝተበገሰ ልምዓት ዕዉት ክኸውን ኩሉ ግዜ ብመጽናዕቲ ዝተደገፈ ክኸውን ኣለዎ። ብመጽናዕቲ ዘይተደገፈ ስርሓት ምክያድ፡ ካብ ረብሓታቱ ክሳራታቱ’ዩ ዝዓቢ። ስለዚ ክሳራታት ክውገድን ረብሓታት ድማ ክዛይድን፡ ብመጽናዕቲ ዝተደገፈ ዓይነት ስርሓት ምክያድ የድሊ።
ክሳብ እዚ ቀረባ እዋን፡ ንዝስተ ጥራይ ዘይኮነ ንኹሉ ቊጠባዊ ጽላታት ዝኸውን ኣብ ዝተፈላለየ ዓይነት ትሕተ-ባይትኣዊ ማይ መጽናዕቲ ክግበር ጸኒሑ እዩ። ካብቶም ዝተኻየዱ መጽናዕቲታት ብድምር ክንብል’ውን እንኽእል፡ 5500 ዝተፈላለዩ ናይ ትሕተ- ባይትኣዊ ማይ እንተላይ ናይ ጂኦ- ፊዝካዊ መጽናዕቲ ኣካዪድና ኣለና። እዚ ኣበይ’ዩ ተኻዪዱ፧ ኣብ ገለ ኣገደስቲ ከምኡ ዓይነት ኣገልግሎት ዝደልያ ትካላት ንኣብነት፡ ዒላታት ኣብ ምዅዓት፣ ድሕነት መሰረት ዲጋታት ንምርግጋጽ፣ መሰረት ትሕተ-ባይትኣዊ ዲጋታት፣ ድንድላት (ቢንቶ)፣ ጽርግያ፡ መእለዪ ወሓይዛት፣ ኣብ መስርሕ ህንጸት፡ መሰረት ናይ ትካላት ጥጡሕን ኣብ ዘተኣማምን ከም እተደኮነ ከተረጋግጽ ስለ ዘለካ ወዘተ ክጥቀሱ ይኽእሉ። ነዚ ንምግባር ጂኦ-ፊዚካዊ መጽናዕቲ ይግበር እዩ። ብዘይካ’ዚ፡ ኣብዚ እዋን’ዚ፡ መጠነን ብደረጃና ዓበይቲ ተባሂለን ክጥቀሳ ዝኽእላ፡ ዝተሃንጻ ዲጋታት ኣለዋ። እዚኣ��ን ማዕረ ናይቲ ዝተገበረለን ወጻኢ፡ ዝህባኦ ኣገልግለት ክዓቢ፡ ጥዑይ መሰረት ከም ዘለወን ክረጋገጽ፡ ጂኦ-ፊዝካዊ መጽናዕቲ ክግበረለን ኣለዎ። ስለዚ ኩሉ እቲ እንገብሮ መጽናዕቲ ከምቲ ቅድም ኢለ ዝጠቐስክዎ፡ ንቐወምቲ ንዓዲታት ክኸውን ይኽእል ንኻልእ ኣቕርቦት ናይ ማይ ምሉእን ርጉእን ኵነታት ክንፈጥረሎም፡ መጽናዕቲ ከነካዪድ ኣድላዪ እዩ።
ኣብ መወዳእታ ሓፈሻዊ ኣብ ውሽጢ 35 ናይ ናጽናት ዓመታት ኣብ ጽላት ማይ ዝተዓመሙ ስርሓትን ዝተሰልዐ ባጀትን ኣመልኪትካ��� ከምኡ’ውን ተወሳኺ ሓበሬታ እንተለካ እቲ ዕድል ንዓኻ፧

ንተመኵሮታትና መሰረት ብምግባር፡ ንሓንቲ ዓዲ ምንጪ ማይ ካብ ምርግጋጽ ክሳብ እታ ነበርታ ቀዲሖም ማይ ዝወስዱላ ዝተሰርሐ ንጥፈት ግምታዊ ዋጋ ኣሎና። ኣብ ጽፍሓዊ ማይ’ውን ዝተፈላለየ ኣብዚ እዋን’ዚ ብፍላይ መጠኖም ከምቲ ደጋጊመ ዝጠቐስክዎ ብናትና መዐቀኒታት ንኣሽቱ፡ ማእከሎትን ዓበይቲን ዲጋታት ኢልና ኢና ንዛረብ። ነዚኣቶም ብደረጃ ዕብየቶም ኣይኮንናን እቲ ዋጋ እንጥምቶ። ብመጠን ማይ ናይ ምኽዛን ዓቕሞም ኣብ ግምት ኣእቲና ኢና እንጥምቶ። ንኣብነት፡ ዲጋ ከርከበት ካብ 350 ክሳብ 380 ሚልዮን ሜተር ኲብ፡ ዲጋ ገርገራ ክሳብ 50 ሚልዮን ሜተር ኲብ ይሕዛ። ካብዚአን ንእስ ዝበላ ማይ ናይ ምኽዛን ዓቕሚ ዘለወን ዲጋታት’ውን ���ዙሓት ኣለዋና። ኣብዚ ንኽንድ’ዚ ዝኣክል ስራሕ፡ ክንደይ ገንዘብ ኣውጺእና፧ ንሓደ ሜተር ኲብ ማይ ንምሓዝ ክንደይ ኢና ወጻኢ እንገብር፧ ዝቐለለ ገምጋም ኣውጺእና ክንበጽሖ ፈቲንና። ኣብ ጽባሕ ናጽነት ነዚ ንምስራሕ ዝሕግዙና ገለ ገለ ኣብነታት ነይሮሙና። እዚ ድማ፡ ንሜተር ኲብ ብሓንቲ ናቕፋ ንሕዝ ነይርና።
ኣብዚ ሰዓት’ዚ ግን፡ ኣብ ገሊኡ ቦታታት ንሜተር ኲብ ልዕሊ 50 ናቕፋ በጺሑ ኣሎ። ስለዚ ገምጋምና ነዚ ኣብ ግምት ኣእቲና፡ ኣብ ስርዓተ ቀረብ ማይ ኣብ ገጠር፡ ከተማ��� ትካላትን ኣስታት 4.7 ቢልዮን ናቕፋ ዝሓተተ ወፍሪ ተገይሩ ኣሎ። ንማይ ክንብል ዘካየድናዮ ኩሉ ዓይነት መጽናዕቲ፡ ክሳብ 165 ሚልዮን ናቕፋ ዝግመት ስርሓት ተኻዪዱ ኣሎ። ጽፍሓዊ ማይ ንምልማዕ እቶም ኣቐዲምና ዝጠቐስናዮም ዝተፈላለየ ማይ ናይ ምሓዝ ዓቕሚ ዘለዎም ዲጋታት ንበሎም ሓጽብታት፡ ክሳብ 120 ቢልዮን ናቕፋ ወጻኢ ተገይሩሎም ዝተሃነጹ’ዮም። ስለዚ ጥቕልል ኣቢልና ክንርእዮ እንተ ደኣ ዄንና፡ ኣብ ሃገር ክሳብ ሕጂ ኣስታት 125 ቢልዮን ናቕፋ (8.3 ቢልዮን ዶላር) ኣብ ወፍሪ ልምዓት ማይ ውዒሉ ኣሎ።

Senior Ethiopian military officer reportedly killed in Fano ambush
ETHIOPIA ― 💥Sources linked to the Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) say Brig. Gen. Asnake Aytenew, deputy commander of Ethiopia’s ENDF Central Command, was killed during an ambush in western Ethiopia.
According to the group’s Bizamo Command, the attack took place while the general and accompanying soldiers were travelling from Nekemte to Gida Ayana.
The rebels also claimed that a number of soldiers travelling with Brig Gen Asnake were killed during the operation.
Brig. Gen. Asnake was among the few senior Amhara officers serving within the Oromo dominated federal military leadership of PM Abiy Ahmed.
The AFNM attack now serve as a warning to other Amhara military officers supporting PM Abiy Ahmed's war against Fano freedom fighters in the Amhara region.
Officials in Ethiopia have yet to respond to the reports.
Meanwhile, the Bizamo Command of Fano posted images on social media of what it described as the late general’s military and national identification documents, saying the move was intended to remove any uncertainty surrounding the claim.
