We persist in treating international law as a set of universal constraints when in reality it functions with a veneer of legitimacy that sanitizes imperial violence. It is bureaucratic theater used by the powerful to narrate their dominance, allowing them to pretend there exists some 'rule-based order' whereby the weak can formalize their grievances.

The attacks across south Lebanon, Gaza, the occupied West Bank, et al. being violations of international law does not matter because, for those in the crosshairs of the metropole, international law does not exist.

While you spend your energy invoking legal arguments, the settler spends his energy refining the material occupation.

Today, I spoke to people returning to Dahye (Beirut's souther suburb) whose homes have been partially or completely destroyed, and many of their faces beam with pride. One woman, a local teacher whose apartment in Haret Hreik was carved out after an Israeli airstrike, the roof completely collapsed, told me: "For the sake of our resistance we would have endured even more. For the sake of a single boot of our resistance fighters fighting on the borders we gave what we could, and if they asked for more, we would have gladly offered it."

There are already local efforts in numerous areas across Dahye to clean up and rebuild and while there is a sense of victory that has taken over, people are still asking everyone to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings due to Israel's notorious disregard for ceasefire agreements and human life.

A shopkeeper in my own neighbourhood was sweeping glass out from his store and preparing to restock his goods, with a smile on his face. "Thank God for your safety," he told me. "Is there anything more beautiful than returning? There is nothing more beautiful than being home," he said.
