Good morning and welcome to day four of #HLF24! This afternoon, we’ll be exploring the beautiful Neckar River. But first, we’re kicking off the day with our inaugural Science Hub Showcase at Heidelberg University. We’re excited to welcome all institutions and partners.
Exciting news from #9ECM! Today, Anna Wienhard @mpiMathSci, Scientific Chairperson of the HLFF, is giving a plenary lecture on "A beautiful world beyond hyperbolic geometry: Anosov representations and higher Teichmüller spaces." Tune in live at https://t.co/CGCbk6L3Hv
We are happy to announce this year's Schöntal Workshop on "The (classical) Geometry of Physics" (September 3-6, 2024). It is designed to stimulate discussions & targeted towards young researchers from physics & mathematics. More info and registration:

At the moment, the application phase for the 11th Heidelberg Laureate Forum is still running and you can apply until February 9, 2024 to attend!
At #GYSS2024, our managing director Ruth Wetzlar presented the HLF and talked about why you should apply.

Here is the connection between the net and the ball.
By the way, the Euler characteristic determines that there must be 12 pentagons (as for the dodecahedron), but there could also be more hexagons.
That sounds like a project for this year 😜
Do you remember the great ball we made out of #origami Sonobe units at the HEGL Christmas party?🎄
Do you see the underlying structure? 🤔
The ball consists of many triangular peaks, usually 6 of them meet at one corner, but sometimes there are only 5. So actually our ball is…
…270 units in total! 🤪
Here is the net of the ball with the corresponding colors of the peaks added. The lines indicate which parts are made up of one Sonobe unit.
Can you find which 5- and 6-gons you can see in the picture of the ball? The Solution is…
In this week's HEGL community seminar, Nguyen-Thi Dang form Orsay introduced us to mathematical #crochet and some of her works, like #Möbius strips or models of the hyperbolic plane.
Don't you think such a Möbius star also makes a good Christmas decoration? 🌟
At our HEGL #Christmas party yesterday we played board games, enjoyed cookies and build several #origami polyhedra out of Sonobe units. The smaller ones are made out of 3, 6 or 12 units. Can you guess how many we needed for the big one?
Our director Anna Wienhard was recently elected to the German National Academy of Sciences @Leopoldina. Acceptance into the Academy is considered one of the highest academic honors. Sincere congratulations! 💐
