An IDF soldier from the Golani Brigade, Shalom Shitrit, testified before a Knesset committee that his unit received explicit orders on the morning of October 7 to cancel all patrols along the Gaza border from 5:20 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. — a clear stand-down order issued right as the attack was unfolding. He called it a "strange" directive.

The IDF activated the Hannibal Directive that day — the policy of using lethal force to prevent Israeli soldiers (and in practice, others) from being taken captive, even if it meant killing Israelis. This was confirmed by Haaretz investigations, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and multiple reports. IDF helicopters, tanks, and forces fired on vehicles heading toward Gaza and positions in places like Kibbutz Be'eri, where hostages were present.

This is to say nothing of the fact that as the New York Times reported, Israel had the plans for the attack for over a year before and was warned by Egypt just days before the event.
