Lucy Higgs Nichols was born into slavery in Tennessee around 1838, but during the Civil War she escaped and eventually found her way to the Union Army’s 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. Rather than simply seeking safety behind Union lines, Lucy remained with the regiment and served as a nurse, caring for sick and wounded soldiers as the unit moved through the war.
Her service took her alongside the 23rd Indiana through several major campaigns, including the siege of Vicksburg. Nursing during the Civil War was difficult and dangerous work. Medical facilities were often overwhelmed, disease killed enormous numbers of soldiers, and nurses worked with limited supplies under conditions that would be almost unimaginable today. Lucy earned the affection of the soldiers, who came to know her as “Aunt Lucy.”
After the war, she moved to New Albany, Indiana, where many veterans of the regiment lived. Years later, when Lucy sought a federal pension for her wartime nursing service, she encountered a problem familiar to many women and formerly enslaved people whose contributions were poorly documented. The government had no official record proving that she had served as a nurse.
The men of the 23rd Indiana had not forgotten her. Dozens of veterans supported her claim and petitioned Congress on her behalf, testifying to the work they had personally watched her perform during the war. Their efforts eventually succeeded, and in 1898 Congress granted Lucy a special pension of $12 per month.
This photograph from an 1898 reunion of the 23rd Indiana is especially powerful because Lucy stands among the veterans whose lives she had shared decades earlier. She was welcomed at their reunions and became closely associated with the Grand Army of the Republic, the influential organization of Union veterans.
Lucy died in New Albany in 1915 and was buried with military honors. Her story reminds us that Black participation in the Civil War extended far beyond the famous Black regiments. Formerly enslaved people served the Union cause as nurses, cooks, laborers, scouts and soldiers, sometimes without the official records that would later prove what they had done. Lucy Higgs Nichols was fortunate in one respect: the soldiers she cared for lived long enough to make sure her service was not forgotten.
The 76 year old Ohio Democrat has been pepper sprayed for protesting the killing of George Floyd and arrested at a voting rights demonstration on Capitol Hill. She chaired the Congressional Black Caucus and helped secure Juneteenth as a federal holiday. But Rep Joyce Beatty is now best known as the unlikely leader of the opposition to Trump’s push to rebrand the Kennedy Center in his own honor.

"Underage girls testing positive for pregnancy at detention centers."
Let me fix that for you.
“ICE officers are raping little girls in detention centers.”
There you go.
Trump denies the claims about him in the Epstein Files. They’ve never been fully investigated by authorities, let alone covered in the press. Can you imagine if these claims appeared in the files about Biden? Can you imagine the GOP reaction? They’d talk about nothing else.
I think we are all getting so numbed to the unbelievable headlines and things happening that we can’t digest just how wild this whole Kennedy Center mess is.
He took an establishment that was totally operating fine and wants to destroy it all just because he can’t put his name on it.
The greed and jealousy of it all is so disgusting. Demanding to put his own name on someone else’s memorial.
He has destroyed so much and continues to do so.
When will this end?
“These are images 🇺🇸 servicembers want you to see…”
ABC News reporter Rachel Scott (who Trump recently snapped at) shares images of destruction on 🇺🇸 military bases
Andrew Tate strangled the women he raped until they lost consciousness. He beat them and slammed them against furniture. He also texted one of his victims: "I love raping you"
Now Tate is in prison crying because he doesn't have hot water or AC...
🚨HOLY SHIT: Senator Chris Van Hollen says the United Arab Emerites poured $2 BILLION into a Trump-family crypto venture - at the same time Trump approved a deal giving the UAE cutting-edge U.S. AI chips.
Corruption doesn’t get clearer than this.

A blue wave will not happen unless you personally make it happen. Do not trust the polls. Do not believe other people will do it for you. Go vote and encourage everyone you know to do the same.
The Kennedy Memorial is made of irreplaceable marble that was gifted by Italy.
Matisse tapestries found throughout were gifted from France.
The massive starburst chandelier in the Opera Hall, and lights along walkways, were a gift from Sweden.
The record-breaking stage curtains were a gift from Japan. They had to build special looms to weave them because of how big they are.
The grounds are beautiful with displays of art.
This is what Trump is destroying.
Does it not bother anyone else that the male reporters just stand there & watch like when Trump was asked a legitimate question by Journalist Rachel Scott & he lunged forward making a strange growling noise & then gets in her face while berating and pointing at her?
American actor D.L. Hughley on Trump:
"I'm proud I've never voted for a president who raped women and children. I've never voted for one who stole from charity. I've never voted for a president who celebrated anyone's death. Half the country can't say that."
Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and anyone else in leadership that decided that it was okay to grab Afghan interpreters who stood by our sides in combat and deport them to gulags in Africa is a damn traitor that has turned their backs on the very people that we relied on in combat.
Without these interpreters it would have been impossible for us to accomplish our mission and communicate with the people. I had no air support where I was most of the time. There was only 4 of us on my team, me, my NCO, my interpreter and a mechanic. I had 8 Afghan police stations that I was responsible for providing equipment for to defend themselves against the Taliban. What do you think would’ve happened if we had no means to communicate with the Afghan police?????
This entire administration is criminal. These people risked their lives for us. They are disappearing these folks to third world countries. The cruelty is unacceptable. When this nightmare ends, this entire corrupt administration must be held accountability. There is nothing patriotic about this.
James Talarico: “I wish our government would go after pedophiles the way they go after brown men headed to work at 7am. I wish this government would close billionaire tax loopholes like they’re closing public schools across this nation. I wish this government would fund our healthcare like they fund new forever wars in the Middle East that no one asked for”
